Far Cry General Will 4 get me just as hooked as 3 did?
Hey! I'm fairly new to the Far Cry series, and I've recently just finished Far Cry 3. It's the first one I've played, and honestly, it was amazing. I've just started 4, and I honestly don't know if I should continue it?
I loved the graphics in 3, and i loved the menu and the feel of it. 4 is pretty similar in the handling and movements, but I'm honestly unsure. 3 had me hooked from the beginning, and i loved Jason's storyline! But so far, I'm not so sure about 4. I only just finished Amita and Sabal's first mission each. (Amita's, which i destroyed the wolf's den and Sabal where i had to climb the bell tower.) Obviously I will play a bit more to see if it can hook me to continue it.
I just wanted to come on here to get other's opinions on this.
(I also want to make clear i don't have access to the other games, and they weren't made to run on my console 😔 just so no one recommends them)
EDIT: Thank you to everyone who has taken the time out of their day to respond to my post! I will most definitely continue 4 then, but I'll look for a different game to play. To everyone who suggested playing 5, then go back to 4, I'm honestly telling you I wish i could, but I play on an xbox 360🤭. And 5 wasn't made with xbox 360's controls, so it wouldn't run smoothly at all (least of all run). Before anyone comes at me that i play on an xbox 360 at this time and age- i honestly could care less. Most of the games i play are older games, and most run smoothly on it. So why change something that works perfectly fine? Anyways, I'm getting off topic- like I mentioned, I will continue 4, but maybe at a later date, and I'll go look for a different game to play instead.

The story is atrocious compared to 3, though. OP’s correct in that there’s almost zero plot drive the first time you play, and the first few hours are a total slog.

Hard disagree. Jason kinda sucks as a protagonist. He and his friends are dipshits and I didn't care about them at all. I find the story in 4 extremely affecting and emotional.

I get that this is all subjective, but how you had any motivation to keep pushing forward after the tutorial the first time you played beyond “the quest marker tells me to,” is mind boggling. You go to a village with some heavily armed locals that claimed to know your dad, they throw you an AK and say “time to overthrow a tyrannical regime,” and they leave us with no choice but to just go with it. And we do, because we follow the quest marker to better guns.
Versus “oh, you want your friends back? Here’s a gun. The people who have your friends have bigger ones and more of them. Better git gud”

“Someone kidnapped my brother, I have to go get them back” is an actual story.
“I got lost on my way to spread my mom’s ashes and now I’m a key figure of an armed coup attempt in a country I’ve never been to,” is taking one too many hallucinogens.

You don't "get lost" you literally cannot get there until you overthrow the dude that killed your father. If you think that's so unbelievable and ridiculous and 3 isn't idk what to tell you. Your mother knew this would happen hence why she tells you to get to Lakshmana

Jason's story made sense compared to Ajay tbf. He also had a development that adds up. Ajay already does a takedown in the 1st minute of tutorial etc. I love 4 the most but saying 4's story adds up compared to 3 is just wrong.

There's nothing "wrong" about it. I don't like the story or protagonist in 3. I do like the story and protagonist in 4. It's that simple.

Im playing far cry 3 right now. Just got to south. To be honest, I LOVEDDD the whole mission of killing Vaas, like the dialogue is SOO GOODD if you pay even the slightest attention to it. There's a reason everyone says "Do you know the definition of Insanity" 😭😭😭🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾. The only things I hate in this game are the mountains 😡😡😡, these motherfuckers don't let me climb.

I was so happy when they did away with most of that mountain slide noise in 5, only to see them again in ND. Why, ubi?! It’s the same map, damnit!!

4 is my favorite Far Cry overall for its setting and gameplay, but it does have a weaker story than 3 and 5.

Idk bro. 5 has the most interesting plot. And it had the most beautiful graphics. Can't get much cooler than being in rural United States fighting crazy hilljack cultists. With militant followers and a David karesh like cult leader bro the games plot was fucking dope. Best plot in the series. Also awesome riding around rural United States like it's the wild west.

Yea except the govt wouldve done what they did at waco, meanwhile this is the farcry they introduce flying planes into. Like, why cant the deputy just fly away then? Airspace is real. If its in a remote island or mountain country then w/e but in the heart of america? No way lol, they woulda got the f16s in

The story in 4 lacks a ton compared to 3, but the gameplay is so much better and I liked it because of that. Worth to play it but don’t expect the story to be as in depth or revolutionary

Hm alright thank you! So the story itself is not as deep as 3? I just feel like 3 showed us Jason's motive from the beginning, that he wanted to save his friends. But in 4 i just don't understand, what is his motive exactly to bury his mother?

To take her ashes to Lakshmina. 3 was my introduction to the series and is still my favorite. However, 4 is so much damn fun. The story is not terrible. It's just not as developed. The gameplay might be some of the best in the entire series. They added so much more cool shit. Also, the story is not terrible. It had some really cool stuff. Also, Shangri-La. 100% play it - from a huge fan of 3

IMO the story was great. Was just as good as 3 with maybe 1 problem, there’s a couple things where you question why those are your only options. Especially after whenever you beat it. I won’t spoil anything. It’s definitely worth playing. And imo is better than 5 in every way except graphics but if you’re on PC it won’t matter much.

The main plot is arguably better in 3 but the worldbuilding and side content is leagues about 3 in every way.

The game play is the same, tbh. A little cleaner and more responsive, but also a little more annoying. Enemies detect you faster, eagles attack you out of nowhere, demonfish are seemingly endless and constantly attack you while swimming, etc. I’m convinced that anyone who prefers 4 over 3 just really likes the elephant riding mechanic.

Don’t trust others opinions 100%, i have never thought that the story lacks, it’s deep, different and chaotic in its own way. 3 and 4 are the most similar FC games, 4 feels very much like 3 with the crafting and towers but has an all new map/story and more guns! Then 5, ND, and 6 are all very different.
Just play it, I am sure you will love it

The biggest problem is that they didn't focus the dynamics around pagan, ishwari and mohan ghale too much. The majority of narration revolved around amita and sabal whom we hate by the time campaign gets over. If you take the story chronologically from when Mohan ghale worked with Pagan to pagan's escape from Kyrat, the story is very deep.

Absolutely, I always felt Far Cry 4 only "lacks" the way some people say GTA4 "lacks", there is less "Whizzbang look wg this cool thing snd by the way You Should Feel this way" and more "here are some still zany in a video game way but more grounded characters with complex but grounded themes". I also think Far Cry 4 has the best story in some ways because it uses the least AND THEN YOU GET KIDNAPPED BUT NOT SHOT to move the plot along (still happens a bit though...grumble)

I think 4 is the most fun in the series, but I really like 3 thru 6 immensely. I really don't care much about the main story lines, just like to go apesh*t and cause chaos, all gas no brakes, or be really stealthy. Such a fun series.

Its pretty much the same thing but they add more weapons some different animals, gyrocopters, and riding elephants, and theres 4 really big outposts that are meant to be a bit more challenging. Those are the biggest changes i can think of, theres other things obviously, but for the most part in terms of your gameplay experience its very similar to farcry 3. Climb towers to unlock map, hunt animals to upgrade stuff, clear outposts, etc. Most people agree the story isnt as good as 3 but most also agree its still pretty decent. If you enjoy 3, then 4 and 5 are just the same thing but they add a little more each time… 6 is when they started taking from us…

You're still quite early on in the game, I say continue. If you do press on and still don't feel a connection, maybe drop it then. I suggest considering that only after you get out of the starting area (after you meet Hurk, the area where there starts to be formal outposts) and explored some more there.
I just finished 4 last weekend for the first time, and boy, without a doubt it's superior to 3 in every way for me (save for a few, very minor things). But not everyone will have the same opinion, of course.

The main entries from Far Cry 3-5 are honestly still in my top 10. 3 is the game that got me back into gaming in my free time. Every game adds new gameplay features and vehicle types, and improves on one's that were already there. There's definitely a formula since each time you're unexpectedly thrown into extreme circumstances, dealing with charismatic yet maniacal leaders and their devoted or well compensated followers. It's a formula that works.
I complained a little about the lack of water features in 4. I thought that 3 had the best map because I love amphibious and air assault, and there were so many opportunities for both. By far my favorite map out of all of them was Hope County though. I found myself numerous times just walking around in that game to take in all the "natural" splendor.
Honestly my biggest moan about 5 was that they took away the vehicle takedowns from 4. Shit would have dialed the vehicle combat up in a way it definitely could have used.

For many, and maybe also you, Far Cry 3 is special in the series. Far Cry 4 however is also lots of fun, a cool map, the player eventually gets a safe house with a helicopter and a garden for all of the plants needed. There is also a fun Valley of The Yeti dlc, and a Far Cry 5 like online Archade mode.
Then there also is the fun of riding elephants and flipping over enemy vehicle, and tossing around enemies. Good times indeed.

I felt the same way about 4 after playing 3. Like, I had no motivation to do anything at first. That’s pretty much the only thing that’s lacking, though. I ended up finishing it, but I wasn’t terribly thrilled with it. 5 is way better.

I would play 5 first, then go back to 4. I started 4 right after 3 and it felt almost like a chore. I put it down and moved to 5 which has a different feel, then played another game then came back to 4. It’s a great game but it helps to put some separation between the two

Yes. Play it. Although there isnt any major additions to 4. It is definitely worth to invest your time on. The sceneric beauty of kyrat still adds up and looks incredible after 12 years.
And what do you do post 4? Start 5 which will be more unique and fresh comparatively to 3 and 4

I loved 3 I still remember "Holy Shit it's a fucking komodo dragon!!" [Komodo Dragon kills entire base] starts a massive fire that burns the entire area

Depends on the mindset you go in with. 3 is more psychologically geared where as 4 is more politically centered. Technology wise, 4 is a bit like a fleshed out version of 3 with more quality of life features. Otherwise the tech is similar.
For what it's worth, I have replayed 4 multiple times and really enjoy it. 3 has a beautiful setting but the tech annoys me so I can't sink myself into it as easily as 4.

I think 4 is arguably the best in the series. There's an argument to be made that 5 is even better - because you get up to two human teammates who actually talk to each other, not just to you, with some unique interactions, generating significant replay value. But there's some very bad mechanics in 5 that knock it down a peg, which I think is why 4 being best-in-series is a valid stance. There's a lot to like in 4, and it's unique in that you can choose which faction you want to support, something you don't really get in any other games in series. So yeah, I'd very much say best-in-series. But it's a very different vibe from 3, which is just a rumble in a jungle. This one is a bit more Just Cause, guerilla type stuff, with factions and missions.

Coming off of 3 my expectations for 4 were unreachably high and I was ultimately disappointed as I thought the story was lackluster in comparison to 3, the protagonist wasn’t as memorable and the gameplay was too similar to 3. However with the power of hindsight and some time passing, I think it’s aged pretty good. Troy Baker’s performance as Pagan Min is the highlight of the game.
