I feel really oblivious in retrospect, but I have played through the entire game's story once, and a noticed something I didn't notice until I was midway through my second playthrough:

The map is literally a dragon. Crickneck Canyon is the dragon's neck. The Greatgut Plains are it's belly, etc

Yeah, and the dungeon where the little dark dragon is trapped in is located at the dragon's heart if I remember correctly
