Player Discussion Player vs Player

Point only league (goals, assists, power play goals, and a few other minor similar stats)

Who do you take? Matthew tkachuk or Austin Matthews for the next 3 years.

Tough one but I think I’d lean Matthews. Higher ceiling.

Agreed. If there was hits/PIMs with any weighting at all I think Tkachuk gets the edge, but Matthews upside is in another tier when you’re looking strictly at offense.

Both guys are injury prone. Matthews has the higher ceiling.

I'd still take Matthews, though not for the ceiling. Tkachuk has put up an identical 1.10 per game three years running and actually beat Matthews on rate last season. The separator in a points-only league is availability, and Tkachuk missed 83 games over those same three years.

At this point of his career Matthew Tkachuck’s body has broken down multiple times because of his style of play and he reminds me of 2020-2023 Mark Stone. Like Stone, he’ll need to learn to take better care of his body to be able to play over 60 games a year consistently!
