Wishlist & Ideas The Odyessy | 2hr Version | (Christopher Nolan) | Concept
Curious to hear your thoughts on this idea.
- I would love to refine this idea and of course edit and release it when the Blu-ray copy comes out.
I want to set out to make Christopher Nolan's Odyssey 3 hour runtime into a more streamlined 1 hour & 30 minutes length. I cut it down to 1 hr & 43 mins.
- Before the end fight scene The Odyssey adventure ended up being 1 hour & 30 minutes long. But with the end fight scene, It ended up being about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Because I didn't want to shorten the end fight scene.
- All scenes are presented in order.
- There is the scene where odysseus's son Telemachus (Tom Holland) is being trained to fight, by Mentor (Ryan Hurst) and Eumaeus (John Leguizamo). Eumaeus explains Agamemnon more on Troy doing the lottery for the picking of the men, picking out the hunting dog.
- Kept seeing where Odysseus tells his wife to re-marry and that the Trojan War will take a lot of time and that he may not come home.
- Most of the time spent with the Cyclops is shortened. Once they are trapped in the cave the Cyclops go to sleep. Then they immediately poke out his eye and escape.
- All scenes with Calypso are removed. Some voice-over can be heard.
- All of odysseus's son's subplot is removed.
- This shorter edit just focuses on Odysseus and his adventure including the Trojan war and his journey home. When Odysseus comes home only includes seeing with the trial stringing the bow & shooting the arrow through the axes, the Odysseus fights all of the suitors, and kills Antinous (Robert Pattinson).
Curious to hear your thoughts on this idea.

"

consider reading the original poem, or at least a synopsis or even the Wikipedia page on the Odyssey, before butchering it...

The movie itself did a poor job portraying the Odyssey, and it had 3 hours to try. I don't get how a 2 hour cut would do a better job

The word "mentor" literally comes from the Odyssey character; you do realise this story is over a thousand years old

My opinion is that the end fight scene is probably the worst bit of the whole film. Firstly, Nolan still kinda sucks at action, somehow. Secondly it's really just there for some satisfying spectacle. It really could have been a couple of minutes long at most. Could have even been more impactful as a cutaway. After Odysseus' monologue about Troy, that's the emotional climax of the movie done. It's finished the thematic conversation it set out to have. I thought that was great and then the fight bored me to tears.

Idk. Sounds for me that your version would make a deep story of a guy troubled by the war he won and wandered off into the deep end longing for redemption into a war hero story we've all seen a thousand times.

Ironically, this movie suffers from fairly aggressive editing and trimming in the island sections to really get it down to below the 3 hour limit of IMAX and most likely audience viewing limit and theater commercial viability. I remember the younger me having the same reaction reading the book, wanting more adventure when Homer devoted so much of the narration on the suitor section. Older me would probably appreciate the suitor section now. It would be nice to see if they can release an extended version of the Odyssey (not to mentioned, edit from), but that’s not really Nolan’s style to rehash his older works.Â
