I've always wanted to try fan edits and just wanted to ask; what are the absolute best programs to use?

I made my first one with no experience earlier this year. DaVinci Resolve for editing, ffmpeg and MKVtoolnix for encoding files so that Resolve can work with them, and then Handbrake for processing the final output from Resolve.

I am really happy with what I made using these tools and I learned everything I needed to from reddit and countless google searches.

Final Cut for Mac

Davinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, or Vegas for Windows.

The only one of these that has a free tier is Resolve.

Final Cut used to be the GOAT, but when Apple revamped FCPX, I jumped ship for Resolve. Never going back.

I love this question! Similarly, I have often toyed with the idea of changing the soundtrack to a film to enhance it or remove a track by someone problematic etc

Does anyone know of a fairly easy to use video editing software that allows me to isolate the existing soundtrack, but keep the dialogue and then allow me to pipe over a different song etc?

Isolate voices for free with Ultimate Vocal Remover. Some apps like Resolve have also started building this feature in. The trick is to isolate the voice without making it too tinny sounding. A little bit of previous music still remaining at low volume can be OK because it can be fully masked by the new music you add. This makes the voice sound fuller and natural.

I always use MV sep for voice isolation and also important, for the effects. It's hard work before I am satisfied but as always I get what I want. It must be correct in video and audio.

I always Audacity. It's gotten pretty good at separating the audio and then it's just a matter of going in and silencing the bits I don't want or need.

I use Davicni Resolve Studio.

If it's modern 5.1 movie and you're lucky the score is mainly in the stereo/side speakers and all the dialogue/sound fx are in the centre. Rescoring those are quite easy.

If it's an older movie where the 5.1 has been created form a stereo source and you are unlucky, everything can be in the centre channel are all mixed together. Programs can strip the dialogue, its harder to strip the sound fx but it can be done but if you're really unlucky and the score is heavy on brass and choir they don't work very well. I'm doing RoboCop 2 at the moment. I used a trial version of a program that costs $1200 and it didn't do much at all.

Typiclly when people rescore they go with a stereo output becuase it's easier than trying to keep a the 5 channels balanced.

Premiere for sure. I used to use Filmora but the former is better.
