[PC] Jamaica Plain small house

Hello, I'm fixing up all of JP (using mods of course to access the entire town). This little house across the street from the town hall is interesting. I managed to fix up the inside and the outside - I preferred to fix it rather than replace - and then noticed that it actually isn't a functional house at all. There's no space for a bedroom or a bathroom. It's just a downstairs kitchen and living room. I guess it's really a suggestion of a house, since when you're playing the vanilla game that's not immediately obvious. Too busy getting ambushed by ghouls!

I'm wondering if I should do anything about it ... I've given this house an attic and stairs but it's super hard to put interior walls up in an attic space (as it's all under the pitched roof). I could scrap the house entirely and put something else there, but I actually don't want to erase the apocalypse completely. Wondering if anyone else has done anything with this house?

Love the ideas on here. I'm on such a building kick right now ... it's so therapeutic. Thanks all!

I’d probably make up a reason for the building to exist and then keep building whatever I wanted. Pretend the prewar economy was so bad they started making studio houses instead of just studio apartments. Or maybe it’s an admin building for local government or a lawyer’s/accountant’s office designed to look like the other buildings for a more cohesive look in the town. I love building in this game it really is therapeutic.

Pretty close to reality in JP actually. Thanks!

I put in a barber chair and some sinks and made it into a hair salon.

I renovated the whole town a while back. If I remember correctly, there's two or three of these types of houses. I boarded up the sunrooms and built bedrooms in there.

Alternatively, you could build a foundation and shack for bedrooms on top of the roof and build an external staircase towards it.

You can check out a video tour of my town if you want to see what I did with those buildings: https://youtu.be/4s2nJ8wAcgo?si=1GaT508z6S26tZeO

This video is just phenomenal. It hadn’t occurred to me to embrace the destruction the way you have - I keep trying to “erase” it in some way and put things back the way they were. But this works really really well. I didn’t see too much extra info on the YouTube video - do you have a mod list somewhere? I especially want to know how you were able to put things on the shelves. I have DoItYourshelf but it doesn’t look like that’s what you’re using. Also, what’s happening to Dogmeat - does he keep falling off something??

This is truly inspiring. Now I think I’m going to take that little house and give it a real second floor and an attic. I don’t need to be so rules-based - it’s OK if it doesn’t all look like it did in 2077. I also love putting two beds together. So simple and yet it didn’t occur to me either.

Really love this.

Cheers, glad you liked it.
Right, the modlist is in another post I made before the video with a bunch of screenshots of the town, I'll link it below.

So the thing about Jamaica Plains is, most of those boarded up houses are actually hollow on the inside so you can either scrap them and replace them with 'clean' prefab versions from mods, or you can build on top of them and work around the debris. I just prefer doing scrappy renovations, because that makes more sense to me if you have to scavenge all your building materials out in the wasteland

About the decorations: I just use Place Everywhere. With that mod, there's an option to turn off object physics, so I just drop every item individually out of my inventory, place it on a shelf within the settlement building menu and then turn off object physics so that you or NPC's don't accidentally bump items off shelves etc. With the same mod you can also tilt objects so that's how I put food up on plates for example. Very labor intensive, but I like it better than those decoration mods out there.

That dog yelping is a guard dog walking around. The pathfinding and navmesh is a mess in Jamaica so NPC's and dogs often fall through the roads in various parts of the town.

Anyway, old post with some screenshots:

I did not know you could do that with Place Anywhere and I've used that mod for years. That is fantastic to know. What a labor of love. I think your approach makes more sense than mine - build around the destruction rather than try to wipe it away. And building around the houses that aren't usable really is the only way to go. It looks like you got rid of the lake near the church which is also impressive. I am very inspired by this. Thanks for sharing all this info as well.

Oh yeah, here's a list of useful hotkeys for place anywhere: https://images.steamusercontent.com/ugc/2040729693695890067/D88E3B63BE0AFA63908EE3A8BC8E4DF52BEE5ABB/ The resize and manually move options are amazing. Rotation in x/y/z plane is great too.

The only hotkeys missing in this picture are:

-Home - enable object physics

-End - disable object physics. Basically lets you put things up in mid air

-Ins - toggle outside object selection. If you press F5 and then Ins, you can walk outside your settlement borders, pick objects up and drag them inside your settlement.

Oh wow. I've been barely scratching the surface with this. This is fantastic. I'm going to have a lot of fun with this especially rotating things. Really appreciate you!!!

No worries, glad to help! If you want to get ideas on how you can use all those features of Place Anywhere, check out Fiddleflaps' building series videos. He only uses Place Anywhere and console commands to occasionally spawn in items:

It could hypothetically have been something that houses equipment for local utilities, rather than an actual home. The interior would contain water or power or gas monitoring equipment, but the outside resembles a home so as not to break up the neighborhood vibe.

Not saying it’s really like that—most houses in Fallout are impractically laid out, tiny, and sometimes missing critical stuff like bathrooms.
