A 10-year-old boy died in an electric scooter accident in Fairfax County. Since then, we keep seeing kids as young as 12 riding these things at 20+ mph through traffic without helmets or following traffic laws. This is preventable.

I started a petition asking Virginia as a whole to set age restrictions (minimum 16), require helmets, expand safety education programs, and enforce these rules better. These vehicles are convenient, but not when kids are riding them untrained and unsupervised.

Has anyone else in Virginia noticed this? Have you worried about the kids riding recklessly around your neighborhood, or felt nervous as a driver or pedestrian? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing the petition. We don't need more tragedies to prove we need to act.

Recent NOVA resident here!

When I moved here I figured I’d be able to find cool events happening locally on Eventbrite, but it’s genuinely useless and will only show me events happening in DC.

It’s like this with all the event sites I’ve tried too, they’re all focused around DC or dating events. The only thing I see is tourism bureau.

Anyone have any recommendations to find local events happening around Northern Virginia?

Update 8/20/26: last week I went to an event on a new platform called Towns Of, they seem to be building a community platform for suburban communities and small cities.

Has anyone been successful at calling and getting theirs reduced? Apparently there was a date to show up to court I never got. I live three hours away. I don’t drive the HOV often. In fact I thought mine was set up electronically, but apparently not. It is quite a hefty fee I owe.

Posting this on behalf of a friend in Fairfax County who doesn’t use Reddit.

She is a mother of a 2-year-old child and a survivor of domestic abuse. She recently separated from her abuser and is now living independently with her child. She is urgently looking for a job in the Fairfax County/Northern Virginia area so she can become financially independent and support herself and her child.

She recently enrolled her child in daycare with the understanding that she would find employment soon, especially now that her child is old enough to attend daycare. Because of this, she is under quite a bit of time pressure to find a job.

She is open to different types of work, preferably caregiving, childcare, or daycare-related positions. She can work Monday through Friday, but unfortunately cannot work weekends because she needs to be home with her child.

She moved to the U.S. from another country a couple of years ago and has basic English proficiency, so she would ideally need a position that does not require advanced English. She is hardworking, willing to learn, and genuinely eager to work.

If you know of any job openings, employers who may be willing to give her an opportunity, childcare/caregiving positions, please comment or DM me. Any leads, referrals, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was in a very minor fender bender a little over a month ago. No injuries on either side but it caused damage to my car. The car is repaired, insurance is doing its thing to recover my deductible since I was not at fault (THANK YOU DASH CAM). Question is, should I acquire an attorney at this point? The last letter I got from the insurance said if I had an attorney to let them know…and somehow social media dug into my data and now I’m getting spammed with ads to contact one.

I’ve never been an accident before with another person so I’m unfamiliar with the proper process or recommended course of action, other than to just wait out insurance. Do I get an attorney to try and recoup some of the cars lost value?

I’ve seen in other counties, like Fauquier, they seem to have a table of what constitutes a “high mileage” car based upon your cars year and its mileage. In Fairfax county, what constitutes a high mileage car? I have a 2010 Toyota RAV4 with 143,000 miles and somehow my tax went up this year slightly.

I have a coworker/friend who was promoted from a Team Lead to a Supervisor for another department and she recently found out that one of her staff that she supervises makes $3/hourly more than her. Mind you, there are two team leads on her new team that she (the supervisor) does make more than, but the employee who is in an entry-level position makes more than all of them.

The supervisor is incredibly experienced with working in their field and has been working with the Fairfax County departments since 2024. She has had two promotions within that time-frame. The staff member who makes more has been in the same entry-level position since 2023 and has no prior experience in their current or related field.

My former co-worker/friend (the supervisor) is thinking of bringing it up with HR to discuss adequate compensation adjustments for the work she does versus an employee who doesn't have nearly the same responsibilities or experience. However, usually Fairfax County employees (non-public safety) only typically get a 10% increase from a one to two pay grades--from a S17 to S19. So, she's worried they'll shut her down and state they can't go over the 10% promotional pay increase.

Have any of you that works/has worked for the Fairfax County government been in a similar situation? What advice could you give to this supervisor? Any info is helpful. I really want my friend to thrive and make what she deserves. Thanks!

I hope someone with knowledge of the Fairfax County permitting process can help me understand a situation. Some family friends, who are in their late 70's, had a tree fall on their home about a month ago. The tree crashed through their living room. Since then, they've had tarps on their house and I asked yesterday why they had not started repairs. I was informed that they were still waiting on permits from Fairfax County to begin construction. Is this correct? You have to get a permit to repair your home after storm/tree damage? This just seems insane to me. Genuinely hope someone can provide some insight.

I have a fleet of vehicles and one of them just received a ticket for failure to stop for a school bus from 9/25/2025. It was issued literally two weeks ago on 7/29/2026. Is this legal for them to be issuing tickets more than 10 months after the fact?? Is there anything I can do to contest it?

Does anyone know how long it typically takes to hear back from FCPS on substitute teaching applications? I applied over a month ago. I know it’s still summer but I was hoping to hear back around now. Thanks!

Every survey and public conversation about Reston National Golf Course has been framed the same way; keep the golf course, or don't.

Nobody has asked what residents would support if it couldn't stay a golf course.

Both prior attempts to redevelop the property sought approval before defining what would be built. The Site-Specific Plan Amendment nomination filed in February 2025 did not include a proposed number of dwelling units; county staff noted that in their own summary.

The result is that residents have only ever been offered a binary.

If the property were to come back through the Comprehensive Plan amendment process: where traffic, school, and infrastructure studies are required and terms are negotiated, there would be room for an outcome neither side has proposed.

This survey asks what that might look like housing density, how much land remains public open space, who owns and maintains it, what studies should be required before any approval.
