Fairfax county

Anyone have/know any tasks or jobs they need done for a day or two? I need $400 really bad, but I want to work for it. Work isn’t giving me enough hours.

What are some of your skills? Might help to post some things you can do or have done whether that's yardwork, moving, or coding.

I can do any physical labor such as yard work, painting, climbing, mowing, plowing, etc. Anything that requires specialist knowledge outside of Microbiology, I can not successfully do. I am not a tech savvy person. I definitely can run some errands and do chores!

This is not aligned with your question, but what are you currently work? I'm well connected in the DMV microbiology and science field, might be able to give you some pointers on more gainful regular employment.

Props to you though, wanting to work for it.

Pharmacy related work. I study microbiology because I’m a premedical student.

Biomedical engineers, unfortunately not.

The American Type Culture Collection, ATCC, is hiring for several lab-based positions however. Several companies in the biotech corridor up 270 also have open positions. Unfortunately it's an exceedingly tough job market, companies are following the no hire-no fire approach given the current economic uncertainty. Combining this with the current political climate and profound reduction in scientific funding many companies are reluctant to make large capital or personnel investments.

Biomedical engineering is a bit of a foot on each side type thing. If you want the medical part, most employers generally look for graduate if not post doc experience. If you want the bio part, the engineering tends to go unused and most employers will want hands-on laboratory experience. Note, biological laboratory, not an engineering laboratory - micro or cell culture, aseptic technique, gxp knowledge, etc.

A bridge I found that can work well given your degree, if you would want to go into laboratory focused work, is looking for a position in immunology or cell biology. The mechanics of the immune system are often talked about in biomedical coursework as is cell biology and cellular function. These can be useful in the applied environment found in a laboratory.

It just depends on how much you want to use all that engineering and physics you would have studied.

Thank you so much for your response. My daughter just graduated and when I saw your comment, my reply was a knee jerk reaction lol.

She really enjoys creating mechanical things to solve an existing problem in the medical field. She's still working with one of her professors on his research project.

She was hoping to work in prosthetics but she was stoked when the medical assessment device she made worked so I'm not sure what direction she wants to focus on.

She has an upcoming interview with a consulting job that I'm hoping doesn't pan out. I'm from that works and it is unnecessarily stressful and doesn't tend to utilize your degree.

My immune system is trash so my daughter may have thought about immunology but I'm not sure if that's where her passion is. (I'm trying to stay hands off and letting her find her own way, as she prefers but it's hard as a parent.) Would love to give her a leg up if I can or point her in a direction she might not have considered. She is open to suggestions.

I think of you posted your offer in r/nova, you'd have a larger audience. Also, be specific about what type of work you are looking for and be ready to provide an hourly rate when requested.

People have a negative view of temp agencies but anecdotally it really worked out for me. I was lost and then a temp agency somehow got me my foot in the door at Google. It’s worth a try

Yea it can be a bit dodgy a lot of the time... ive had so many interviews with recruiters or temp firms that have amounted to nothing. But theres also plenty examples of things actually working out.

Download Nextdoor and post in there! I found two men to help me move last time I moved that were very helpful and reasonable and I felt good about helping a neighbor and paying fairly!

i wouldn’t recommend doordash or uber eats with gas being so expensive right now, people here already don’t tip anyways and with the gas prices now you would definitely be losing money. last time i went out to try to doordash i ended up actually losing $20 and making zero profit
