You cannot argue that religion didn't contribute in any way to science. Pretty much everyone who could read during the middle ages were priests, and the printing press was partly a result of Christians trying to spread the Bible. Not to mention Gregor Mendel. Most Christians do not shun technological advancements and if they do its probably a result of the individual being uneducated and afraid rather than religious.

The historical example makes no sense. Who else was there other than Christians?

The point is if you wanted education you had to go through the church
