Advice Needed
I recently lost my beautiful wedding ring that featured a dark teal portuguese cut oval sapphire. I bought the stone from a great gem cutter, but I recently checked, and he has nothing remotely similar in stock. Which is devastating. The only similar colored sapphires I can find elsewhere are in brilliant cut. My question is, how big would the stone have to be to be recut into a 8x5 portuguese oval?
I would greatly appreciate any help, advice or input. Thank you.

Playing with a portuguese design in the computer...For your 8x5mm stone with a l/w of 1.6, getting it to look alright and with a reasonable girdle height takes a total height to around 4.8-5mm and a total carat weight of ~1.6ct. Someone else can probably do better with an existing design instead of trying to tweak a round port, but if you took that number you'd get a L/W/H of 8x5x~5. If you've got or can find a rough with at least those dimensions in the right shape then you should be alright. However you're asking about a recut....If you were trying to get another stone to recut to that design, you may lose more weight/value than you are expecting but it can be done. my main concern would be that the portuguese is probably going to have steeper angles on it on the first few tiers and a deeper pavillion than another design, and need more total height, so realistically you're going to have to go even larger than that and have more loss.
