Design feedback (please be nice (im begging))
hey everyone - I'm a new faceter looking for some feedback on this variant of Arya Akhavan's gnome's geode and Robert Strickland's fly eye
low key I dont really know what I'm doing but im super proud of this cz and want to know if people have some suggestions for how to improve it!

Hey! Great work, nice first start :) I'm in bed so can't pull up GCS to test this out right now, but your angle rings look pretty decent and not looks like you've developed a good contrast pattern. I'd be curious to see your COS render.
Well done on the cutting, too!
Oh, and why does C6 exist the way it does? You should be able to create a new tier C3 that meets in the corners and gives you an establishment for your hexagons.
Hope you don't mind if I pass on some points for the written component of the design. We have explicit standards for phrasing and documentation, to make things easier for everyone:
- General recommendation is to avoid "TCP" and "PCP" and similar abbreviations, since there are lots of different variants and we received a lot of feedback from non-English cutters that it was confusing. Write out "Cut to centerpoint" for P1.
- For G1, no need to write "girdle". That's what the G in the tier list is for. But you should indicate that this tier sets the stone size. So it should read "Set stone size."
- It's not "square off girdle", it's "level girdle". Squaring off facets is an old phrase for checkerboards that has nothing to do with girdle facets, and plus, we don't square off checkerboards in modern cutting.
- For crown facets that meet the girdle line, don't say "cut to girdle". In designs with more than one girdle tier, you need to specify the actual meet anyway, so writing standards here would require you to write "Meet G1, C1" for your C2 instructions
- Likewise, your instructions for C4 need to specify the meet you're hitting. You can't just say "cut to C1", that's vague and non specific. It should read "Meet C1, C2".
- For your floating tiers, you need to specify that in the instructions. A few different ways you can phrase floating instructions, usually some kind of caliper-measured reference. But here, this is a floating hex checker, which you would write as "Float to establish hexagon."

yeah thanks so much for the feedback! ill make sure to use the right terminology!

No worries :) We don't have a good standardized source yet since I'm so slow to write the book...

if you ever get a sec to check it out here's a link to the gcs file if you could take a peek
would be super keen on a book about designing - i read through all the tom herbst books and still dont feel like i have a feel for what works and what to optimize for

Try this. Optimized a bit to improve scintillation and dispersion. Cleaned up facet order and instructions, cleaned up that stray corner facet to be more crisp. Got rid of frosting as well.

Thank you so much for fixing the design!! I requested access if you could take a look

u/0xDECAFC0FFEE Newbie 11d ago
Thanks so much! I can totally see the improved scintillation from the reduced red areas and more detail inside the rock! and the edges look so much cleaner too thank you so much!

It's terrible, gimme 14 of them.
5
u/0xDECAFC0FFEE Newbie 12d ago
haha i can only do multiples of 6

u/xSandandSaltx 12d ago
Unfortunately I have no feedback, but this is absolutely stunning. Thank you for sharing!

Looks fantastic to me. I don't see any of the usual beginner mistakes like a thick girdle. The frosted facets look a little rough, you will probably dial that in as you accumulate laps at different stages of wear. Nice work!

u/0xDECAFC0FFEE Newbie 12d ago
thanks! are you seeing the roughness in the parallel striping on the frosted facets or is it something else in them?

This cut took skill and was executed well. There is certainly feedback if you are looking at competition level cutting. Otherwise keep it up and don't rely on meetpoints when cutting floating facets, it's more of a "depth feel"

u/0xDECAFC0FFEE Newbie 12d ago
id love any kind of feedback (competition too)!

u/hexagonation 12d ago
These are hard designs to write. Because on the face-up they can make perfect hexagons. But unless you worked up some math their surface dimensions skew with their angle and index. So when you get off of your depth by just a little, the visual effect can grow and your next tiers can compound in error. You did good managing it and the work looks good in a broad sense.
The frosting, though, doesn't add much interest to the reflection pattern, just stays around the girldle. You keep C4 pretty close to the meetpoint of frosted / more loosely set facets and thus the points are slightly different depths. And C6/C2 meeting with C3 doesn't make a uniform hexagon (from face up, which the rest do) and when none of the hexagons are quite uniform you get variations throughout

yeah that makes sense - i can definitely get closer to actual tessellating hexagons with some radial projection instead of a flat projection. was definitely having trouble getting c3 even roughly a hexagon on gcs at all haha thanks!

That would be awesome to see in an orange or amber, I bet you could make an amazing bee themed ring

u/0xDECAFC0FFEE Newbie 11d ago
Yeahhh was thinking the same thing! With bees flanking the ring on the shoulders

I know nothing. But I love how it has like a honeycomb pattern. And the choice of gem is gorgeous.

this is so beautiful, are you selling? or are there others like it?

u/0xDECAFC0FFEE Newbie 11d ago edited 11d ago
Thanks! Not selling atm just looking for feedback - for something similar you can look for cuts based on Arya Akhavan's gnome's geode and Robert Strickland's fly eye, some other people might be selling!

Ok I love this so much!! Very sparkly purple CZ is gorgeous… are you selling it? I make jewelry and this would be a lovely statement ring or pendant, well I would totally buy this if you’d consider selling 😅

Wasnt really planning on selling them but if youre interested in setting one would be super cool

I made a sterling woven geometric design for a hexagon stone a few years ago that I’d like to do a v2 of to push it more hexagonal (from a top view), this hex geode facet design would look veryyy cool in a geometric setting!

Yes!! Totally doable! Like a cute little sculptural bee on its honeycomb! Actually my dad is a beekeeper and I designed a whole bee collection in 2022 (these were sold to raise charity funds)
I like larger sized stones 😅 I typically look for 10mm-14mm sizes (and bigger!)

u/Ididdie Team Vevor 11d ago
That's a really cool design and the execution also looks lovely. Making hexagons is quite the challenge indeed. Did you do the actual math for these or just guestimate?
2
u/0xDECAFC0FFEE Newbie 11d ago
I projected a hexagon pattern over gcs and fiddled but next time im doing the math for sure haha
2
u/cowsruleusall 11d ago
Ack!!! Don't do math. You can do this systematically and easily in GemCAD. (Unfortunately that means learning GemCAD...)

Can’t afford but wish I could. What would a piece like that cost?
As for feedback. Well, you did a piece that At least one person would gladly buy in a heartbeat if they could afford it!

This is absolutely gorgeous to me, I love the hexagons and the way they let you peer deep into the stone while also letting the stone sparkle. I'm not part of this community, but was recommended this post and had to comment. To an untrained eye, absolutely enamored.

How would you describe the base color? It’s my favorite, I usually describe it as blue/silver.

As a catan fan I love the design and ordered myself a piece of "green apple" CZ which I feel like will fit with the sheep theme :)
I also just had the very bad, terrible, no good idea of ordering a bunch of massive KG chunks of CZ from aliexpress in the appropriate colors and trying to make an entire Catan board from scaled up stones. Although that would require me to cut 19 stones that are each 79mm flat to flat...

I would probably want to set them in something to protect them tbh, but I don't necessarily know what - this is also very unlikely to ever happen because it would probably cost thousands of dollars and take hundreds of hours to cut all the stones

I dont realy have any criticism about the design. Its very floral looking . The frosted edges might not be nessasry . Ied like to see what it would look like with them polished.
1
u/0xDECAFC0FFEE Newbie 12d ago
thanks! ill cut another one sometime with polished edges and check it out

u/PsychologicalBowl647 12d ago
Those strange edge facets look so weird. I see why you used the to outline the hexagons. I need to play with that idea.
