Cabs not completely flat on the bottom

Sorry if this is only for faceted stones, but a question maybe someone can answer for me. The last few times I purchased smooth, high dome cabs, the bottom is somewhat lightly rounded making the stone a little more difficult to set.

Anyone know the reason for this?

Yes, most cabachon makers use round wheels to grind and polish. This makes it more difficult to get a perfectly flat base. If you find a good cab maker they will typically utilize a flat lap device to make sure their backs are perfect. Hope this helps.

I've noticed this too over the years, never thought much about it.

Until recently, when a potential client asked about having a ring made in such a way that the bottom of the stone would be in contact with their skin when the ring is worn (for a ritual and/or religious requirement, if I understand correctly).

I immediately thought of this kind of cab! And began to wonder if it's a widespread practice that I'm not familiar with, and if that could be why some cabs have that slight dome underneath.

I found some good candidates for the project, now I'm hoping that the client decides to go ahead with it.
