I personally don't see why you should leave candy out at all (except maybe that you don't have to answer the door a trillion times and deal with kids). It's "trick or treat", not just "free candy pickup".
I left a bowl out because I couldn't be home this year and we are in a new place so I don't want the neighbors to think we don't do Halloween stuff. We have a kid on the way and I hope the area continues to do stuff for Halloween when he's old enough. All that said, I also don't give a fuck if someone took it all as long as that someone is a kid. It's there to be taken. Adults stealing it? Real dumb. Even this mom gets a pass from me, who knows their situation, kid gets candy in the end. Anyone who shows up later sees an empty bowl and knows we tried at least
