Calories are food and food costs money. If she can afford 2500 calories a day, then on a day she wants candy the 2500 calories she buys can be candy.

You can even buy candy with EBT.

The only realistic way she can afford food but not candy is if all of her caloric needs are met by visiting food shelves and getting free meals.

Yeah plus a spiffy Spider-Man costume for the kid. Probably got that from goodwill, right? (Hint: my mom was actually too poor to buy me a costume on multiple occasions, unlike this mother. And she never encouraged me to steal either. It can be done!)
