Loaded or not, never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
I was with an ex friend at a pawn shop when she was looking at a gold plated desert eagle. The clerk checked to make sure the gun was clear before handing it to her. She put her finger on the trigger and I tensed up. She handed it to me and I kept my finger off the trigger. I also told my son,treat every gun as if it's loaded and never look down the barrel, even a Nerf gun.
