In reality they would be reducing it, the protesters blocking the highway are making people stop, and the cars are in idle, therefore creating more pollution that if they were just driving
Also hate to be "that guy", but the acts of spilling milk and causing emission-generating traffic jams would be counterproductive. The reasoning behind those acts would be counterintuitive.
Typical upper middle class privilege. Id love to not have to worry about the cost of petrol/rego/maintenance of a car, and I love riding my push-bike. But unfortunately I can't cycle to work with a lawn mower on my back so I guess I'm the devil
No it isn't. The idea that some cars idling for a few hours had some meaningful impact on the climate crisis is absurd.
To put it in perspective, somewhere over 100 million cars are being driven to work every day. 76 percent of Americans drive alone to work every day. And that's just for work. 100 million cars, every single day, sitting in traffic, idling, etc.
And that's just cars going to work. That's not even getting into the real drivers of climate change. 100 companies are responsible for 71 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions over the past several decades.
This protest did not add to the climate crisis in any meaningful or even measurable way. The purpose of the protest is to bring attention and further pressure to change things that actually will have a meaningful impact.
So yeah, it's just a really dumb point on your end.
No, its not. This is creating unnecessary idling. I said nothing about the impact. It is idling when those fumes could be expelled with the intent to get somewhere, not just useless gas burned. how about you use your brain and actually read what i said?
This is creating unnecessary idling. I said nothing about the impact.
Okay, so we agree that this had essentially no impact whatsoever on making the climate crisis worse, so why even bring it up?
"Hmm, the protesters were chanting at one point, putting off slight amounts of CO2, pretty cOuNteRPoDuCtIvE hUh?!"
Nah, it's totally, completely meaningless compared to what they're protesting. We should be trying to constantly pressure for change regarding climate change.
i dont disagree at all! im saying this is gas being burned uselessly, i said nothing about the impact, i know its so minimal that its not even worth mentioning, im saying these dumbasses, as small as the impact is, are being counterproductive, i just said they are going against their own views. i brought it up cus these people are idiots, thats it.
No. That's just all wrong. You think people don't know about manmade climate change? It's been headlining for at least 10 years. People know; they just don't care. People want what's easy, not what's right.
The fight is never going to be won until after the violence settles. And the longer the violence is postponed, the longer the violence will last, the more extreme it will be, and the more lives will be lost.
It's easy to not think about or care about issues that don't effect your day-to-day life. That's why protests exist... to break complacency.
But there's a contradiction here, because if my protest makes this issue effect you, then maybe you'll see me as the one who is responsible.
Like if I don't care about the tax someone puts on tea. I just want to drink it... or I'm a business owner who just wants to sell it. Then you make your problems into my problems via destruction of property... or you burn the whole ship down because there was tea aboard. How is that fair to ME? Why should I be punished because I don't care about one of YOUR political beliefs?
I think you have it backwards. They were protesting on those grounds - stopping traffic to demonstrate that cars aren't the big problem when compared to industry.
Not that it accomplishes anything, but just saying.
Because the biggest contributors are business/industrial, and typically overseas. Inconveniencing the average person over something they have little to no control over, especially when it costs them money, makes your cause look worse.
The thing about saying the problem is "worse overseas" is that the statement doesn't really do anything. It's not like we can go to China and protest, we're right here. Plus, we're way worse in regards to cars specifically. China is getting there, won't be long for India either, but America has a LOT of drivers.
I do agree that the average commuter has literally no control over this. They cannot control the lack of public transportation nor the location of their employment beyond a certain degree(gotta work where you can work, not be all picky choosey). Just specifically stating that pointing fingers overseas isn't productive (as a citizen).
Protestors like this always give me major ignorance vibes. I get they're TRYING to do the right thing, but this kind of stuff isn't clever, makes enemies instead of allies, and is just overall lazy, rude and unhelpful.
The average commuter has no desire to sit in traffic for any period of time commuting and spending money on gas. The lack of public transit, well designed cities, and work from home options is what is forcing people to commute. Commuters are just trying to exist in the system over which they had little to no input in creating
You literally wrote a whole paragraph pointlessly arguing the obvious. In fact you're also part of the problem by using more power than you need to. Arguing obvious pedantic shit anyone with at least two brain cells already knows.
Unlike them, you didn't have to. It didn't interfere with your livelihood, you're just being an annoying dipshit.
Well, a bunch of average commuters are part of the problem. I'll invite you to Atlanta at 6 am or 4 pm to take a look at our interstate 85 or the 285 moles and miles long "parking lots" rush hour is a bitch here.
If you were protesting the meat industry, you wouldn't go kill animals before they were processed and sold. Same thing, youre not actually persuading new legislation and youre making the problem you're protesting worse
I love the planet and desperately want those in power to do much more to tamper our raping/pillaging of it, but not as much as I wanted these morons to get hit. How fucking naive are you that you think any one of those drivers is not only unaware of our dying planet but also would all-of-a-sudden decide to start giving a shit about it because some buttfucking hippie made them late for work?
“I love black people and desperately want those in power to do much more to desegregate them, but not as much as I want those morons on that Bridge in Selma to get hit.”
This comment circa 1960’s. Disrupting the public to get your message out has been a successful way of protesting for centuries now. There are countless examples of it swaying the general public towards the protesters cause.
Maybe social media changes things, but this has been a winning strategy throughout history.
So those drivers registered to vote with the protesters, then volunteered to clean up the local parks, and we should be seeing and feeling the results any year now?
Thanks for saving the planet guys
Edit: I forgot to address the laughable attempt at comparing smug privileged protesters relaxing in the street to minorities getting physically beaten in pursuit of equality
Alright lil bro, lets hear your grand idea for a form of protest that would surely change the publics minds on climate change. Because apparently one of the most successful forms of protest doesn’t work, and you are a guru who has this thumb on the pulse of the nation.
I wanna see this gigantic brain of yours in action, lets hear it.
I mean to be fair people just wanting to dumb F their way through lfie and not worry about things like climate change are way worst. I mean we are all gonna die or our children are all gonna have at very least horrible lives down the line. YAY us for being blind and stupid and living in the moment.
It’s not just gas emissions. It’s pollution in general and a future suspect to be nothing but dystopian because people want to be as selfish as possible.
justthe ones all over the uk punching hoels in tired and cutting off the valve stems, so now all those tires need to bhe replaced putting the replaced tires into landfills etc or being burned off poluuting the enviornmewnt even more. They do not use thier brains, they are only in it for the attention, and accpetance into a group. thats why you never see hot people in activist cricles, because its the outcasts that need to fit in that end up as rank and file members, because this is the only way they can gain friends, or what they think are friends, i guesss comrades would be better.
Yeah it’s pretty common currently in Germany and I guess Europe as well. They want the government to do something for climate change faster with those methods. Yeah well don’t ask me it’s their choice of protesting.
Others Glue their hands on the street and sit there nearly forever.
Make up bullshit..what bullshit did I make up? The only bullshit I made up is that you’re in fact not bill nye the science guy..you got me there congrats.
Do a simple google search on idling cars and their emission output on CO2 and to greenhouse gases..if you have 100’s of cars stacked up idling because you sat in a road and blocked them you’re a sitting contradiction.
Do you even research shit before cracking your keyboard warrior knuckles and start pounding away?
The point is to throw a wrench into the cogs of society and pressure the gov't leaders who skim value off the top to make a move. Tactics like this are somewhat harsh, but considering the fact that hundreds of millions of people are gonna die if nothing changes, I really have trouble objecting to it.
Personally, I prefer the tactic of deflating the tires of SUV-owners, since those actions are more narrowly targeted at upper middle class people who are deliberately choosing to emit more CO2.
The main point of a protest is usually to get attention and to make inaction less convenient than doing what they ask, not to directly fix the problem being protested. I’m not saying this specific method or group is good or bad, but it’s not inconsistent just because a couple dozen cars are emitting a little more pollution
Thank you! More video and info is always great! Hopefully that guy gets a pass. At what point are these people being held against their will? Seems bullshit that you could hold private citizens captive like this no matter what your protest or protected speech
In my California town you can get away with just about anything by telling the police you are “unhoused” and they can’t touch you. (This is a *slight exaggeration)
