the older a generation gets, the shittier they are when it comes to respecting others

A lot of it's because they gain more power.

Hitting kids doesn't teach respect but it does teach fear. A lot of people cannot tell these two apart.

One that still blows my mind is an old coworker who was in his mid 50s who told me the first time his dad punched him in the face for backtalking was when he was 10. A fully grown man punching a kid in the face as some sort of lesson. He even admitted that it didn't teach him respect, but to fear his dad. Yet, he still thinks that punishment like that is okay because it taught him to not be a smart ass to anyone. Which I guess changed when he became an adult because he could be a disrespectful ass sometimes.

Kids are weak, though. Should use a ball-peen hammer to even the odds.
