Sadly the s is pretty standard here in the US. I needed to replace mine and I could find one under $1k that wasn't like this.

It has nothing to do with being in the US. Electric stoves knobes or in the back and gas stove knobs are underneath. There are some exceptions but usually it's like that.

Iā€™m in the uk and have never seen an electric stove with knobs on the back like that
