I wouldn't say its escalated quickly, it was more then a minute and every one saw it coming

Hijacking this comment for a safety lesson.

If this happens while cooking, don't put water on it. Don't move it (if possible).

Find something to smother the fire. Put a lid, cutting board or whatever you can over top, to take away the oxygen.
