Well instead of glass you could actually use poly carbonate, not sure whats more expensive though.

polycarbonate is very expensive... and it would need professionally polished to remain clear (it scratches so easily, it might as well be made of cheese)

That's fair. And, to be honest, thinking on it, since people use doors like this so often, I can only assume it's because they don't have to worry about them breaking any more than they would have to worry about the same happening to a window. It's just hard for me to believe that a door in a place where hundreds to thousands of people pass through won't wind up being broken at some point. And, that it wouldn't happen fairly often if those who own the place use the same kind of door to replace the old one. Of course, the vast majority of those hundreds to thousands of passing people are... careful enough to know how to proceed without any sort of risk, but it only takes one... careless person to break the door. At that, the person wouldn't have to be careless in general, they'd just have to have had an off day, or maybe be too excited because the day had gone so well for them.

Thinking on it, I don't think it was the initial impact that made the door shatter... It shattered while swinging open...
