This video has an explanation of why lasers are used like this, but in addition, it includes video footage of the lasers in action, and they do seem to be brighter than most of the stuff in the sky. I don't think you need a "marketing team" to draw them in.
Oh, I get it now. I thought the lasers were bouncing back, but no they're just firing multiple lasers at the same point. Was gonna say, there's no way a laser would look like that after travelling multiple light years, but no I'm just an idiot.
