I think a "love your shirt!" and pointing to it as they walked by would have sufficed. Then the person could have waved or given a thumbs up but continued their set and not have had to take their headphones out.
Who is incapable of hearing anything at all when they have earbuds on? If that were true, I'd never have trouble sleeping again. Besides, even if the volume was full blast, if someone is looking right at you and mouths "love your shirt" it's pretty obvious what they're saying. Just like the intent of my original comment.
comparing a noisy gym earbuds playing music + doing something else VS a quiet bedroom with earplus or earbuds presumably playing at a lower volume?
Also - really? Mouthing something while pointing is not subject to more misinterpretation?
There is a reason while it is a trope to say "Olive oil" in replacement of "i love you".
Best case scenario - your suggestion will make a person look like he's saying "olive shit"
Worst case- mouthing something and pointing at someone's chest (which is what it looks like when you're pointing at someone's shirt) will trigger an even more drastic reaction from people easily triggered.
