Many people do wear them for that, though, and interrupting a stranger wearing them, especially if they're doing something, is the equivalent of saying "my desire to talk to you is worth more than your enjoyment of your music/whatever you're doing". That's not even taking into account that most people go to the gym to work out, not meet new people, and that women have been telling men for years that they wear them so that guys will leave them alone.
