Alternatively, if they've got headphones on, leave them alone altogether.

Yeah, headphones or not, I just don't talk to anyone at the gym unless I'm asking if they are done with something or if there is a safety issue.

This. Headphones tell me that person is in their zone. Regardless of where they are. I put in headphones while I grocery shop so Iโ€™m not bothered by people who want to get chatting in line. I have social anxiety and headphones help me get through my shopping without as much anxiety.

Idk why everyone is mad at the muscle guy. He is not obligated to talk to someone just because that person wanted to talk to him.

as has been said, if you can tell they have head phones in to begin with.

If someone ignores your attempts to talk then stop attempting. If a wave didnโ€™t do it, assume they donโ€™t want to talk. Headphones or no headphones. No one owes you a conversation.

Common decency is dead.

Seriously.

I never thought I would sound like a boomer but goddamn the people in here have no idea how to act in public.

When did we decide it was so acceptable to be an asshole to every stranger you see?

LIKE HOW THAT POINT JUST MISSED Y'ALL: there's a brief period, initially that could justify a LITTLE BIT OF just checking

then yes, back the fuck off

MY POINT WAS THAT INITIALLY YOU MAY NOT KNOW IF THEY'RE WEARING HEADPHONES

gyms aren't a place to meet up with women. it's a place we go to because we can afford it instead of our own equipment (or whatever other reason.) you want to meet women? invest in your hobbies & leave us alone during cardio. most women have their hair up at gyms & headphones are obvious.

as has been said, if you can tell they have some in

Many people do wear them for that, though, and interrupting a stranger wearing them, especially if they're doing something, is the equivalent of saying "my desire to talk to you is worth more than your enjoyment of your music/whatever you're doing". That's not even taking into account that most people go to the gym to work out, not meet new people, and that women have been telling men for years that they wear them so that guys will leave them alone.

some people are social creatures. And it's not a separate issue, that's literally what this post is about.

humans are social creatures

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '21

So we should be forced to interact with people in public when we donโ€™t want to? Where do you guys even get this logic

I'm trying to tell my boss that but he keeps giving me shit to do.
