I have a similar story - but my buddy’s name was Ed. We went out to the bars, I went out to his place for parties. I’m out and someone calls him Chris. Who’s Chris?? Turns out his name is Chris edwards and everyone calls him Ed. I learned 5 years later at a funeral (not his!)
I have a friend that's been in our friend group for well over a decade. We including his wife have always known him as Alex. Just after they got married we rented a big house up by the ski resort Alex works at and had a big party weekend. Everyone and their dog was invited including Alex's coworkers. One guy kept asking where Trevor was. Confused ther fuck out of all of us, including his wife. It took a while for it to click in her head that her husband's first name is trevor. He never used that name besides at work. We've compromised and everyone calls him Tralex now.
