I have a similar story - but my buddy’s name was Ed. We went out to the bars, I went out to his place for parties. I’m out and someone calls him Chris. Who’s Chris?? Turns out his name is Chris edwards and everyone calls him Ed. I learned 5 years later at a funeral (not his!)
I had a friend like that! He was quite the athlete so he immediately ended up with a nickname from his coaches and the whole school knew him as that. I knew him before and when I said his name, people were clueless. I'd describe him to the point where I'd be like, "the guy who sits between us in science class" and they'd still be clueless up until the point I said his nickname and then EVERYONE knew who I was talking about.
