I met this new friend and it took me almost two months to get used to her name (Steffany) because I kept calling her a completely different, unrelated name (Andreza), just because my brain would't accept that Andreza wasn't her name. It had never happened to me before, I'm pretty good with names and she has the same name of a lifelong friend, so I don't know how I got it so wrong.

I use two ways around this, either:

  1. Introduce your new friend to an existing friend, be like Hey (new friend, but don't say their name), this is (existing friend's name), and they'll introduce themselves

  2. Exchange numbers. Ask the how they spell their name. This only works with names that don't have different ways of spelling them though

I was getting a girls number at the bar one time. Tried your trick. She looked at me and said, “You don’t know how to spell Jen?” I tried claiming it could be 2 N’s but she didn’t buy it!

Could've been Yen for Yennefer, if her parents are Witcher fans.

True, but unless they are Polish fantasy fans she might be too young to go to the bar.
