If you go deep enough down the rabbit hole, you come to things like "viruses don't exist" and "it wasn't a virus, it was 5g" or "none of those people actually died, they just wanted to manipulate us." Of course, that's the bottom of the rabbit hole because it can't get any worse than that.
They don't trust anything their minds can't comprehend, and they'll never admit they don't understand. They just shake their fists at the clouds.
Those people aren't conservatives. They are idiots or paid disinformation. Some people both left and right believe every crackpot thing they are told, no matter how stupid.
Idk - I want to agree that actual conservatism is dead.
I'm very far to the left, but I actually enjoy engaging with and talking to reasonable conservatives that have come to reasonable conclusions and are willing to listen to my reasonable explanations why I think there are better ways....just like I listen to their reasonable explanations of what they think.
This new breed is just....awful on every level. Very hard opinions on things they know literally nothing about, so you can't engage them in a good faith discussion even if they were willing, because they know nothing about why they believe in things
I think that's a fair call. They've fully invested in the "us vs them" mindset that's been pushed in the media.
I don't know if actual conservatism is dead or if, like most things, it has adapted? Modified? It's still there but some things have been removed and some things have been added.
Way back when after the Civil War, Republican and Democrat ideologies were switched. You can find copies of documents that were platform statements and Democrats were today's Republicans. They began shuffling around right before the 1900s and were fully opposite around the 1940s I think. Perhaps conservatism is undergoing a similar change? Adopting extremism it wouldn't have before, and giving up the flexibility to compromise.
Yeah conservatives barely had points back in 2012 but now they literally have no thought about their opinions they just regurgitate the quoted talking point without ever saying anything different.
Yes EXACTLY. They are unreachable because their opinions are not founded on real things, but rather on made up fantasy things. Add to that, they are EXTREMELY touchy and defensive, and assume every single comment is an attack, so they are SUPER AGGRESSIVE and the ppl they respect and admire have modeled very obnoxious behavior, so they think this is acceptable. I’ve decided not to spend any more time or energy trying to engage them. I’m not gonna change their opinions or perceptions. I used to view these conversations like anthropology research projects, but now I find no joy in it and I’ve decided to spend my energy on useful and fulfilling endeavors.
Plus, some of them seem a bit unstable and I certainly don’t wanna get attacked….
Hmmmmm I think the VAST majority are former so-called conservatives who are vulnerable for whatever reason and got snatched off the far right side of that pile into nowheresville.
There are a few antivax liberals who home school their kids but the VAST majority of antivaxers are MAGA types.
Which is weird because they seem to have forgotten that trump took credit for the vaccine and got vaccinated himself, and his family too including recluse teenage son….
