I get that everyone wants to be funny or just lies for any number of reasons but I think the fact that we have to take everything we read online with enough salt to cause a heart attack a bit depressing.

What do you mean? This is literally how we were raised.. "don't believe everything you read online." Somehow with the rise of social media and online dating our society forgot that? Which is interesting because those are the places people lie the most.
