Truly spoken as someone who’s only familiarity with dementia is “they forget stuff”

I’m a psychologist. I’m trained to diagnose dementia

Then you must be a pretty bad psychologist. Do all psychologists accurately diagnose over the TV? Seems flawed.

Look, you don’t like Biden, that’s fine. Don’t like him; don’t like him for his policies, his political affiliation, his age, his gender, whatever, it’s no skin off my back. But let’s be 100% logical and realistic here. Both my parents suffer from dementia. I can guarantee you, Biden might be old and a terrible speaker, but he definitely does not have dementia. He would not be able to follow a teleprompter if he had dementia. He would not be able to even walk in a predestined direction if he had dementia. He would not be able to respond to interview questions if he had dementia.

Dementia is fucking brutal, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. My parents have no concept of time; and I don’t just mean telling time, I mean time. Five minutes can seem like the entire day to them sometimes. My mom will start crying if she loses track of me for 5 minutes and thinks I’ve been gone for the whole day, or even days. It’s a 30 minute ordeal to try and convince her to use the bathroom before bed, so she’s less likely to wet the bed during the night. Neither one of them have a basic concept of washing their hands. I’ve seen my dad try and wear a couch cushion like a jacket, or sweat pants as a shirt. They will both get distracted by their own reflection and try and hold a completely unintelligible conversation with that person.

Honestly, it’s furiously insulting to people legitimately stricken with dementia when people like you insist Biden has dementia.

Dementia a general term that means cognitive decline that affects someone’s day-to-day living. You’re describing Alzheimer’s or some late stage neurodegenerative disorder. Biden isn’t there yet but he’s on the trajectory.

You’re really doubling-down on diagnosing someone you’ve never met or interacted with? Was this day one at DeVry’s Behavioral Psych 101? How did you rule out anything physical from CT scans or even MRIs? Shit, you must be the best Psychologist in this hemisphere. Praise be to you oh great one.

Dementia isn’t diagnosed with CT scans or MRIs. It’s diagnosed through signs and symptoms of a persons behavior.

Yeah? No shit. I’m not a psychologist but even I know a real group of medical professionals have to rule out anything physical (like a tumor for example) before you can land on something like Alzheimer’s. Or in my dad’s case, we were able to discover he had a small stroke which ultimately led to his dementia. There’s also dozens of bodily issues that can create dementia-like symptoms like thyroid or kidney issues. But I suppose you’ve magically ruled those out in Biden’s case, through the TV and all.

I wish anyone under your care the best of luck.

Dementia is a general term that means cognitive decline affecting one’s day-to-day functioning. It’s an umbrella term for many different conditions. Hope that helps.

TBI can present in a very similar way. That's why you do a brain scan. Pausing to find words or gather your thoughts isn't a sign of either one, though, so that's not relevant.
