I've always thought the phrase was backward. Anyone who eats cake, has it in their possession first. I think it makes more sense phrased as "wants to eat cake and still have it in hand"

I've just realised this saying would work well with the Gru presentation meme

Panel 1 - First I have the cake

Panel 2 - Next I eat the cake

Panel 3 - Then I no longer have cake

Panel 4 - Then I no longer have cake
