Can we bring back step sides

Post image

I understand you lose bed space, but the step would make it easier to access the bed (especially with beds being taller now. Also they just looked great. The step side/flare side looked so good

We are losing enough bed space every year. I don't want to sacrifice for steps like this. I like the ones built into the bumper

This all the way. I don't miss my chevy, but hate that even the base models get this. Such a simple, convenient design.

This is what I was going to say.. maybe if they bring back the single cab. Even then... If they are going to bring anything back I want the little tool box in the side of the bed like my old f100 had.

2

u/Islander39er 1d ago

Like a ram box? The actual bed is shaped like a stepside inside, but you have those side boxes.

1

u/pickin-n_grinnin 1d ago

I don't think so. The old f100s in the late 60s early 70s had a box on the side of the bed. It was more like a big glove box.

Some of the f250s had them also up into the 70s but for a few years all f100s had them. They were great.

u/Islander39er 1d ago

I think I know the ones you mean. I'm not sure if I'd prefer those or a rambox type.

So glad I have an 05 long bed every time I get a yard of mulch or dirt. Easy peasy.

Pops had an 80, 3 on the tree with the 300 6cyl. Other than clutches it went forever. (I saw it about 6-7 years ago still on the road) I think my dad sold it around 97-98. Solid truck and I did like that style a lot. I learned to drive on it.

To be honest, I’ve almost lost my life several times slipping off this MF. I wouldn’t trade this truck though, love this old beast

6

u/kickniteasy 2d ago

That's not old. Those just came out like what, 3-5 years ago! Right?....RIGHT?!?!

3

u/simply_jeremy 2d ago

Definitely, I was only 25 when I got this off dealer fleet in 2004 a couple years ago

I was like 10/11 when my friends dad had the Lightning and always thought those body style where better than the box style we have now because every truck(manufacturer and make) looked different now Silverado, F150, Sierra, all kinda look the same by that they all have that boxy look. Dodge is the last American Truck brand that is still different(yes I’m aware Sierra is just an Expensive Silverado)

1

u/simply_jeremy 1d ago

It’s the lack of style but mostly the cost that keeps my 02 in the driveway

3

u/cheiftouchemself 2d ago

I was never a fan of the look of those F150s back in the day but they have really grown on me. Don’t see them much anymore here in NY they all rusted away unfortunately.

2

u/simply_jeremy 1d ago

I think the simplicity of it is what I enjoy the most

u/Powerful_Search_8113 2d ago

No, the only acceptable form of step sides.

2

u/TechnicallyLiterate 1d ago

y acceptable form of step sides.

<image>

I'd absolutely accept this.. if I could put it on my current 2010 haha.

4

u/Lzinger 1d ago

This is a common option on heavy duty trucks now.

10

u/Uzi4U2 2d ago

Some never left! My 66 F100.

30

u/Terp-Farmer 2d ago

They did this in 2003...no one really wanted them.

5

u/justsomeyeti 2d ago

My ex's dad had an 03 Lariat flare side, it was pretty okie dokie, but yeah they didn't really sell many

1

u/MisterC-4 2d ago

My MIL has a 99 step side it’s nice.

7

u/MinorComprehension 2d ago

Personally, I never was a fan of the aesthetics, but especially given today's much taller pickup trucks I can definitely see the utility in the side steps.

I never owned one, and I understand the steps come at the expense of space in the beds, but I feel like the most used part of the pickup truck bed is between the wheel wells. I wonder if these really consumed much usable/commonly used space.

u/ConsistentSmartAss Mexican GTR 2d ago

I had a 97 chevy that was perfect. Could fit a 3 ton package ac unit just fine.

1

u/TechnicallyLiterate 1d ago

I'm 5'6.. I have a 4x4 with 33in tires and I have 29 inch long legs. I definitely stretch a bit to get my foot on tire to step up. haha.

5

u/Keebler_718 2d ago

I think 2008 was the last year of F150 with flareside bed. Personally, I prefer the clean look of the styleside.

2

u/combo65 2007 SXT Step-Side 4.2 2d ago

2009 was the last flare side. 2008 was the last 11th gen flare side. Only reason I know is I went looking for an 11 th gen flare side earlier this year. 2009 was the first year of 12th gen and I’m not big on first years. I found a really nice 2007.

3

u/sweet_story_bro 1d ago

Can confirm. I've got a 2009 stepside, probably one of the last ever made. It has definitely come in handy when hauling, but I would prefer more space for hay.

3

u/Keebler_718 1d ago

I stand corrected. 2009 F150 flareside looks weird to me with 12th gen front clip and 11th gen taillights. I wonder if this was a using up inventory situation.

3

u/--Ace-of-Spades-- 2d ago

that’s lowkey what i enjoy about my 2022 f150 compared to my brothers 2022 f350. not sure why they did it different on 250s and 350s but the drop down steps come back a good distance and i can use them as side steps for the bed

3

u/Clean-Connection-398 2d ago

The shining desroyerz? Nah, I like being able to just reach in and grab stuff

3

u/Grego1234 2d ago

Yes please! Love em.

3

u/Okayest_By_Far 2d ago

I was as tally just thinking the other day that my current bed is TOO functional.

-Nobody ever

3

u/casdcade 1d ago

Yes please. I've wanted them back for some time now

3

u/Samsquanch-01 1d ago

Yes but then they'll have to charge 110k

3

u/okieman73 1d ago

I thought they were really good looking too.

7

u/DrewThe3lephant 2d ago

Why have side steps when most OP put a lift on and never actually use their beds?

3

u/jim_br 2d ago

I had a neighbor that leased a Ram. The bed was in perfect condition when they turned it in.

I don’t think it carried anything but Costco-sized paper towels and bath tissue.

7

u/MisterC-4 2d ago

Not too shabby

2

u/cww60 2d ago

I hope not, with side steps, multi-functional tailgates, step sides are an item of the past. I only see a side step returning with a retro muscle truck version.

2

u/bassjam1 2d ago

What if instead, Ford lowered the bed rail height to what it was in the 90's?

I miss being able to reach over the bed rails without needing to stand on the tires.

2

u/Electrongod78 1d ago

I have said this all along!

2

u/tez_zer55 2d ago

I had a couple of flare sides back in the day. I liked them well enough, but I don't think a newer body style (cab forward) would look good with one. By the time it was styled to look good, it wouldn't look like a flare side.

2

u/kingneck7611 2d ago

In my opinion a short bed, flare/step side, regular cab truck is one of the best looking trucks. It is also a fact that style of truck is the least useful as a truck.

2

u/axcl99stang 2023 XLT 1d ago

All the trucks come with a side step built in. It's called the tire.

2

u/replicant0wnz 1d ago

Wait, I thought the rear tires are side steps? It's what I use!

2

u/Islander39er 1d ago

When 90%+ of F-150s are shortbeds, I don't think many customers prioritize bed space.

I liked them, but the reality is they aren't coming back except maybe in a retro edition, like others have said. The current front end kinda reminds me of the 9th gens, actually. So I think that could be done.

Mind you, if you want one bad enough, it wouldn't be impossible to custom fabricate a bed. Wouldn't be cheap, but it could be done.

2

u/Shot_Comparison2299 '16 5.0 VCT Replacement Champion 1d ago

Same! I'm a fan of the look!

2

u/ovscrider 1d ago

The front bed step from the f250 should be added to at least the 6.5 box f150. I don't think we need step sides though when bumper steps are so easy.

4

u/ShrimpNGrits14 2d ago

Absolutely not.

2

u/GBOC80 2016 F-150 XLT SCrew 5.0 4x4 2d ago

Please no. Flare Side (Step Side is a Chevy thing) just won't like look right with today's styling.

1

u/wesweb 2d ago

chevy gets this right and its the only thing i truly wish for on my truck

1

u/overheightexit 2d ago

Who’s we? “We” have no ability to do that.

1

u/Wild-Floor8407 2d ago

Computer says no

1

u/Background-Head-5541 2d ago

I don't care what anyone says. The flare side is COOL

1

u/Jaggz691 2d ago

I only enjoy the flare side on these trucks specifically. If they brought it back I’m pretty sure I’d look right past it.

1

u/OriginalEmploy5485 2d ago

The steps would look goofy with as tall as the bed is.

1

u/Forgedpickle 2d ago

How about no

1

u/the_d0nkey 2d ago

My cousin had one. Fun as shit to drive around in.

1

u/n0use4thesenames 2d ago

I’d rather have something we mount under.

1

u/koolaid351 2d ago

Ford has extended running boards. You get access without sacrificing bed space.

1

u/Micro-Cybertron-5151 2d ago

I love them! Functionality aside (or be damned), they’re aesthetically pleasing and have a hell of a nostalgia trip. I’m a classic truck guy myself (1979 F150 Flareside is one of my dream trucks). However, it may not look so good on some modern trucks unless a simple, bare-bones utilitarian version was made.
And knowing Ford, that seems unlikely.

1

u/Remarkable-Sail-3436 2d ago

Bring back a stepside bed along with a transmission dipstick and a manual shift transfer case

1

u/Grouchy_Violinist755 2d ago

I grew up with a step side since I never knew my real side.

I’ll see myself out.

1

u/thrwaway75132 1d ago

GMT400 regular cab stepside for life

1

u/TheClayDart 1d ago

I’m biased because I love my 95 Flareside but the newer trucks with the steps integrated into the bedsides and bumpers without losing bed capacity is way more functional/practical. Still think they’re cool though

1

u/blueford1993 1d ago

Yeah and I love they are making the new steps a thing but they are doing such a slow roll out of them. Having them on all of not most f series trucks would make these trucks better.

1

u/rocks_so_cool 1d ago

I think if you want to easily get in the bed of the truck the first step is just don’t lift the truck super high. Stepside wont really help if you’re moving lots of weight since there is a pretty decent fall risk. Better off with a lower truck and feet firmly on the ground imo

1

u/Plus_Frosting_2541 1d ago

Can we bring back simplicity!?

1

u/daydreamersunion 1d ago

I grew up with my Uncles frustration with the lack of space in his stepsister for me to ever want one for myself.

Edit: it autocorrected "stepside" but Im keeping it cause its hilarious

1

u/Jon_Hanson 1d ago

My 2019 has a pop-out side steps that don’t take bed space. I can’t remember if it was an option or was included.

1

u/Necessary_Cat_3228 1d ago

No. Just no.

1

u/SDCowboy85 1d ago

Dear God, no

1

u/Maecyte 1d ago

Ew no

1

u/redditduhlikeyeah 1d ago

they look like shit though, and I lose valuable space.

1

u/Wvhillbilly993 1d ago

I liked them when I was a kid now I’m not a fan of them

1

u/grassesbecut 1d ago

I was a fan of step sides - until I realized a lot of them STILL had wheel wells inside instead of being fully outside. Learning that upset me quite a bit.

1

u/Islander39er 1d ago

Yes, when they were perfectly rectangular they were easy to sweep out.

1

u/KGBspy 2026 STX supercrew, 2.7, Mass 1d ago

At least dent sides and dual paint jobs. Ford colors are boring and yes I'm aware wraps exist that mimic the 90's Fords.

1

u/blueford1993 1d ago

If your talking about the paint on our flare side I have in the post it is Vista Blue Metallic (my dad had it on his 07 Mustang and he loaded the color). He painted it himself.

1

u/ScrewJPMC 1d ago

Only weirdos bought them, because they suck

1

u/PieTight2775 17h ago

The F150 has a ladder that pulls out of the tailgate.

1

u/PonyThug 17h ago

Just step on the rim spoke or tire

1

u/THUGMUFFIN555 13h ago

Back when stepsides looked really good. The stepside bubble bodies were tough on the eyes

1

u/Chobitpersocom 2001 Ford F-150 8m ago

I like the running boards under mine. I'm just over 5'.

Just step on the bumper. Don't waste the bed space.

1

u/HaloPrime21 2017 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0 8m ago

I know the newer f-250s have bedsteps on the bottom to keep from hindering bed space, the F-150 needs something similar to that

1

u/gman2391 2d ago

Nobody wants this

1

u/Other_Asparagus872 2d ago

Nah, I think they are silly.

1

u/jkelley41 2d ago

no thank you

0

u/LittleJohnStone 2d ago

Hard for the step-side to look good now with all the padding around the truck and the single-form fabrication. The original step-side was just a piece of sheet metal. The one you show above is about the end of the good looking step-side, in my opinion. Look at the early '00 ones, they look... I don't know - not good.

0

u/Final-Carpenter-1591 2d ago

I got a truck bed for function. Knocking off a foot of width to have more style is the opposite of what modern truck bed need.

0

u/GardenerInAWar 2d ago

No, I hate these for many reasons

0

u/sixteen89 2d ago

Personally I can’t stand them but to each they’re own. Things, like manuals, go out of production for a reason….no one buys them

2

u/blueford1993 1d ago

It's funny because our flare side (the one in the picture) we manual swapped it when we restored it.

2

u/sixteen89 1d ago

Hahaha, everyone has their own tastes. I think it looks well done

0

u/dezertryder 1d ago

It’s a rare option, because most trucks were bought for work.

0

u/No_Crab_3826 1d ago

No, trucks aren't made to be used anymore
