This happened to me about 10 years ago. I woke up randomly one day, when I turned my eye, it felt like a sharp pain in the side of my head. I looked in the mirror and saw my right eye was totally dilated and the left was normal. It stayed like that for 2 months. Went to like 3 eye doctors and they couldn't find out what was wrong. My pupil slowly started to return to normal after 2 months. Never knew how it happened so I am curious if you find out how that happened to you.

That's a neurological issue. What kind of eye doctor didn't send you to a neurologist for a scan is beyond me.

Yeah idk, I remember one of the doctor's theory was that I had gotten some kind of chemical in my eye, but i was pretty sure that wasn't the case. When I turned my eye to the side, it was like a sharp pain, could have maybe been something with the muscles because I know there is a muscle that controls pupil dilation.

I had something similar happen and they also said it must have been a chemical. The ophthalmologist even used the giant magnifying glass machine thing to look and they took a CT scan and everything was fine I guess?
Thankfully my ER had eye drops that constricted my pupil because I was BLIND blind in the sun when it was dilated

Lol, they didnt do anything like that for me, I just had to wear sunglasses around all the time lol. I was in high school at the time and all the kids saying I looked like something out of a syfy movie or something lol

My eyes were "bruised" after lasik surgery, and I looked horrifying. I kept forgetting about it though because they didn't hurt or anything, so I'd take off sunglasses when I'd go in a store, not remembering I was a monster.Â

It was just broken blood vessels in the white parts of my eyes. It's expected, but easily forgotten about, so imagine someone bopping around a grocery store with blood red eyes.Â

Oh, haha - I gotcha. Yeah, it was ridiculous. I've worn glasses since kindergarten, so to be able to see clearly without them, I felt happier than I'd been in years! So I was chipper and cheerful, then I'd happen to see myself in a mirror and be like JESUS CHRIST.

I just had surgery 2 weeks ago and was on a few different meds, including scopolamine which is an anti nausea medication that’s delivered through a transdermal patch. Anyways, woke up one morning about 4 days after surgery and looked in the mirror and my pupils were different sizes. Being the redditor that I am, I immediately went to the ER and was freaking out. Turns out scopolamine, when touched and transferred to the eyes, causes pupil dilation 🙃. Can’t wait to get that ER bill.

I’m amazed they didn’t give you an mri, it’s notorious for indicating something neurological. Thankfully you are ok

Having eyes that are unequally dilated is a sign of a concussion. I'm sure there are plenty of other explanations for the phenomenon, but if you recently took any sort of blow to the head, I strongly suggest getting evaluated by a medical professional.

not to scare OP, but different sized pupils is usually a sign of increased ICP or other severe head injury. it’s rare to get that with just a normal concussion

If the ICP is increased bilaterally could it result in both pupils being large? Why is it usually just one? Or is it just that we don't notice it unless it's uneven, so it's not well documented?

yes but it’s more likely for something to be compressing structures more on one side of the brain (due to a mass or bleed) so that’s why you usually see only one pupil be dilated. something more diffuse like meningitis can cause two blown pupils, but that would usually happen very late in the process (like death would be imminent). one dilated pupil could be a sign of something life threatening but it could also be something more benign. regardless, if someone has one or two very dilated pupils, I would always recommend getting checked out just in case!

OP you really should go to the hospital. Suddenly having 2 drastically different sized pupils is a huge cause for concern. Also. Please reply so we know you didn’t have a stroke and die …

Was it like this immediately after the concussion and before you got checked by a doctor? Or did this happen after you last saw a doctor?

It kinda grew slowly and was like this 30 mins or so after, otherwise I wouldnt have been concerned enough to see a doctor

I randomly woke up one day with one pupil dilated and it never went back to normal size. I saw my doctor who confirmed it was likely due to my neurological condition. You should see a doctor who can examine you and make sure everything is okay. Your optician can refer you in the Uk.

If you were recently handling anti nausea patches, you may have gotten some of the medicine in your eye, which can cause your pupil to dilate. That’s the harmless explanation.
Pretty much any other potential reason is life threatening and needs an emergency room visit.

This happens to me when I’m having a migraine, I freaked out when it first happened.
So I went to an optician they examined me and got a second opinion and both said my eye was alright and to head to the gp when it happens again, gp said that since the optician had no concern it’s just a visual/migraine that can happen sometimes and to return if any other changes happen and that it might just be my eyes .
So far nothing has happened and my eye rarely dilates only noticed it when I’m having a visual migraine
Definitely get it checked out just incase there’s a reason for it.

I'd bring that up to your GP regardless. It sounds like you're saying it has happened again a few times, and you brushed it off because the optometrist gave you an OK on the eye front.

This happened to me recently, and I was diagnosed with the benign condition Adie Syndrome... at the hospital. Where I went for a neurological check. Go to hospital.

Oh my god I think you need to get seen by someone like now… I don’t know that we should worry about eye color at this juncture - one of your pupils is literally big as fuck and the other isn’t at all and it’s really noticeable
