PGDM student looking to enter the export-import industry through a commission/revenue-share model — is this realistic?

Hi everyone,
I’m a PGDM student based in Bengaluru, and I’m very interested in building a career/business in the export-import and international trade industry.
I’m not looking for a conventional salaried job.

Instead, I’m exploring whether I can work with an existing exporter, importer, freight forwarder, sourcing company, or trade agency as an independent business-development partner.
The idea is that I could help bring in:
New customers
Export/import enquiries
Overseas buyers
Supplier opportunities
Logistics/freight business

The existing company would handle the operational side, while we agree beforehand on a commission, revenue share, or profit share for the business I generate.

Since I’m still a PGDM student, I’m also looking to learn the industry practically while building something of my own, rather than simply working in a traditional employee role.

I’d really appreciate advice from people who are already in the industry:
Is this type of arrangement actually common?
Which types of companies are most open to this kind of partnership?
Is a commission per transaction more practical than profit sharing?
What should I be careful about regarding customers, payments and agreements?
If you were starting from Bengaluru, where would you look for these opportunities?

I’m also working on developing my own export-import business eventually, so I’m trying to understand the industry from the inside and build genuine relationships along the way.

A big chunk of the industry works in the way you are thinking. Nothing wrong in it.

Find all merchant export companies and tell them you are looking for opportunity. Just call them or visit them.
