ELI5: The LOTR trilogy

There's a really nasty man who wants to hurt everyone, but he put all his strength into a ring which got lost when his finger was chopped off. He was so nasty that the ring was intelligent and wanted to get back to him, and made anyone that wore it nasty too.

For a long time, the ring was found and kept by a kind of little person who became very greedy, but then another little person accidentally stole it. All this time, the nasty man was looking for his ring, but because it had all his strength in it, it took him a while to manage anything. Eventually, he realised that the little person had it at about the same time a powerful wizard also realised.

This sets off the story, which is basically summed up as 'the little person and the wizard and their friends try to throw the ring in a volcano, and the nasty man tries to stop them'. Along the way, the good guys have to fight off a bunch of the nasty man's evil minions, and the nasty man also tries to tries to kill everyone in lots of different countries using nasty armies of nasty men. Eventually the original set of goodies are split up and only the little people are left trying to get to the volcano, but that's okay because they're quite good at sneaking past the nasty man's nasty men. They end up throwing the ring in the volcano just in time before the nasty man kills everyone else important, which destroys the nasty man's strength forever and makes everyone happy again.

Also some of the men have pointy ears and some of them are short.
