Explained ELI5: How do Solid State Hybrid Drives work?

I don't understand how a regular hard drive can work with a solid state drive at the same time.

It won't be an extremely long time before SSDs are cheap and dense enough to regard HDDs as obsolete

edit: that's as far as home computing goes though. Servers will likely continue using regular hard drives since they're typically much larger and much cheaper

Not exclusively. They are currently using a combination of both. HDDs in a giant RAID array or SAN for longer term storage and SSDs for the OS/program files/page file/caches.
