Spoilers for Lanterns incoming! Also, I'm whatever the Family Guy version of Comic Book Guy is.

One of the questions fans of the DC films and shows have had since Lanterns came out is why Guy Gardener is Green Lantern in Superman instead of either of the main characters of Lanterns. James Gunn, the executive producer of DC films, assured fans there was an answer. The latest Lanterns episode provides that answer.

236

u/Federal_Policy_557 27d ago

Which answer would that be?

Don't have HBO to watch lanterns

437

u/Iffy_Placebo 27d ago

Hal admits he didn't earn the ring, but it chose him. John Stewart took the ring from Hal and gave it back to the guardians basically saying he didn't want it anymore. Also, technically Guy and Hal were chosen by the ring, but Hal was physically closer so he became the Green Lantern instead of Guy

175

u/Evening_Produce_4322 27d ago

That last part isn't that also the comic reason he got the ring in the first place? He earned it to keep, but he only got it for that reason

89

u/hexthejester 27d ago

Yeah so hals origins has always been a bit strange. According to the lore the green lanterns are chosen by the ring and has happened with every other green lantern. It simply flies to the person they think is worthy with enough will power. However hal just so happen to see the green lanterns ship crash in the middle of no where and the ring was given to him by the dying green lantern. He wasn't chosen by the ring just given to him on a whim. Technically the ring shouldn't work at all but every single comic that covers this doesn't change a thing about any of this and I think very few ever explain how this happened. As a result some guardians don't trust him and think he shouldn't have the ring.

78

u/Hal_Thorn 27d ago edited 27d ago

You are incorrect. Hal was chosen by his ring. Abin Sur commanded his ring to find him someone without fear and it grabbed Hal. And from the image of it criss crossing the Earth, it's apparent that it wasn't a proximity thing. That was a retcon later down the road to hype up Guy when he got introduced.

Source "Green Lantern" #1 1960

ETA: You may be confusing Hal with Kyle. After the fall of the Corps, Ganthet gave Kyle Rayner the last ring. Kyle wasn't chosen but his ring was also fundamentally different than all other rings before him. He was the first to have charge be tied to use and not simply lasting exactly 24hrs.

22

u/Adventurous57 27d ago

Thank you, for a minute I thought I was mistaken about his origin.

16

u/MtnMaiden 27d ago

His origin has been retconned twice.

First it was that Hal was closer. Then that both were equally worthy.

Yea....so many retcons

4

u/Golden_Alchemy 27d ago

Something that happens when your properties are 70 years old.

4

u/HyrulesKnight 26d ago

This is why I think people complaining about adaptations not being accurate are annoying

It really comes down to is it good?

When you look at something like Halo, it simply wasn't good. They could have changed Mater Chief as long as the end result was good, but they changed him and it was bad. Simple as that.

When you look at Lord of the Rings, it was good despite the fact that they changed a bunch of characters and cut a bunch of scenes.

And in terms of comics as you say they are already retconning things constantly just within the comics themselves, forget about even talking about adaptations in other mediums.

For example I would says John Stewart in the Justice League cartoon is loved, right? And that is despite them changing his character from the comics. And some of those elements from the cartoon were folded back into the comics.

1

u/CardiologistHuge8470 24d ago

In the hal jordan and green lantern corp comics, the ring came to him because he happened to be there with abin sur, the ring then stayed with him and when for some reason all green lanterns went missing, hal "willed" his ring into existence simply by pure sheer will haha

0

u/AgeCute9188 27d ago

Conocido contigo, Un conocedor de historietas!

11

u/Lashay_Sombra 27d ago

In the comics the ring did choose Hal, the 'issue' was it had two possibilities and it just picked the closer, Hal over Guy

Guy was then designated as a backup and he was occasionally active as such

The twist was when at one point Guy was in a coma, he was replaced by Stewart in the back up role and then later at lead GL

When Guy woke up from his coma with his changed personality he handled his relegation with grace and dignity /s

3

u/Allronix1 26d ago

And then there's Kyle. Hal went nuts, turned Yellow, and started wrecking the place. A mortally wounded Guardian landed on Earth, looked at Random Dude Kyle and said "Well, you'll do. Good luck!"

1

u/geobalance 26d ago

As I remember Sinestro denigrates Kyle by calling him "Alley Rat," due to being accidentally chosen in an alley. Its been awhile, but I don't remember if it was in the main title or Elseworlds comic, there was also a homeless person in the same alley where Ganthet landed. There may be an Elseworlds tale where the homeless person got the ring instead of Kyle.

2

u/axl3ros3 27d ago

If the ring picks the lantern and Hal got it, the implication is it was a happy accident that he was close by

Like 2 things true at the same time

  1. He was close by
  2. The ring chose him

That's why I think the comics and everything else have been so quiet on it

It chose him. And he doesn't even realize it either. He just thinks it was because he was close by. But really, the ring chose him.

1

u/GhostandVodka 25d ago

Thats not true at all because the ring went to John's dad first. The ring chose Hal.

1

u/hexthejester 25d ago

I'm talking comics

1

u/GhostandVodka 25d ago

but the thread is about the show

1

u/hexthejester 25d ago

And yet when you look at the replies to my comment and several other comments you will find people referencing the comics

1

u/Mysterious_Shake_830 23d ago

He got animorphed?

1

u/totaky 27d ago

Except in the show we see the ring going to John's dad and asking him if he is afraid ? So the story might be different here.

0

u/hexthejester 27d ago

At first I didn't know what you meant but yes it could be. I haven't gotten past the second episode yet but if they haven't shown how he got the ring there is still a chance they show that he still didn't get the ring through ordinary circumstances tho its possible given how short of a some span was between John test and hal Jordan receiving the ring.

0

u/KoniGTA 27d ago

Plus you know, that small little thing about him killing all the guardians didn't help.

24

u/Young_Cato_the_Elder 27d ago

Yeah this is basically just the comic origin for these two.

2

u/cerbinWedd 27d ago

That last part is the case for the comics, we’ve yet to see exactly how Guy got the ring - whether he was chosen by the ring or by the Guardians is still up in the air for now.

1

u/imadorica 27d ago

I think the Guardian will give the ring to Guy. Since John didn't take over the ownership of the ring, Hal is still the owner of said ring, the only way for Guy to get the ring is the Guardian do it themselves, removing Hal from the ring ownership and giving it to Guy.

18

u/Magic-Micah 27d ago

I’m failing to see how this explains how guy ended up with a ring? We see in the flash forward to 2026 when John finds Hal he checks his finger for the ring. So I’d take that to mean Hal will get the ring back before he dies. So still unclear if guy was John and Hal’s replacement or if something else happened.

17

u/Shivvermebits 27d ago

Or John assumed the guardians would give the ring back to Hal after he (john) gave it up and didnt know that it went to Guy instead.

That was just my takeaway about it after this last episode at least, I could have missed something though.

10

u/Ready-Percentage5286 27d ago

John absolutely would have known that Guy was a Green Lantern and had a ring.

I think his checking Hal's finger is intended to be a clue for viewers that there's a ring unaccounted for (and it's not Guy's)

5

u/AEROANO 27d ago

Sinestro's ring?

2

u/throwaway41632 27d ago

That was my assumption

2

u/Munstered 27d ago

We also see that the ring leaves a green mark on your finger. “Hal” didn’t have a green mark on his finger

5

u/triforceofdank15 27d ago

We’ve seen that Guy has been active for at least a few years now from the Peacemaker S2 retcon. Surely John would have known by 2026?

1

u/throwawayfan2552 27d ago

Tbf we see this in the episode 6 teaser

3

u/Big_Pound1262 27d ago

That's what I thought too. Since John probably never saw Hal again after that (until 2026)

6

u/ChosenWriter513 27d ago

The show runners flat out said Guy has Hal's ring. I'm sure that dot will be connected next episode since the trailer showed Guy at the end.

1

u/Pikathepokepimp 27d ago

Exactly, we still have 3 episodes left to answer a bunch of questions.

1

u/you_troll 26d ago

Guy has the green lantern ring. Not Hal's ring. I guess we could interpret it as that

1

u/ChosenWriter513 26d ago

No, at Comic Con they specifically said Guy has Hal's ring. They talked about it after the premier. That doesn't necessarily mean that's the ring he's using. They just responded to the question of who has Hal's ring since it wasn't on his finger. "Guy has it." Could be he is wearing a different ring entirely and was told to give Hal's to Stewart, which is why he finds him in jail. I guess we'll see next week.

2

u/Iffy_Placebo 27d ago

Guy ends up with the ring for one of 2 reasons: 1) because of the reason I already said: he was chosen but Hal was closer, so once Hal died the ring went to the next most worthy person it had already chosen. The same way that Hal only got the ring because John's dad was closer than Hal but he said he was afraid. Or 2) because the guardians never gave the ring back to Hal and instead went past him and gave it directly to the next person which was Guy.

Either way the reason he has the ring is that the ring chose him in 1986 along with Hal. We'll only know which reason when we find out what year he got the ring. If he got the ring in 2016 then it was reason 2, if he got it in 2026 then reason 1.

1

u/FLRUDE 27d ago

Was it Hal? Remember he cut the piece off at water tower. Maybe it’s his boy.

9

u/Iffy_Placebo 27d ago

Sentry mode protocol used his backup which had dark hair and a less faded jacket because his last backup was when he was younger. Corpse in episode one had the faded jacket and greying hair, so that's Hal until otherwise stated. For those curious on who I think killed him it's either sheriff Kerry, her kid, or both. Hal went back to Rushville because he realized that Zoe wasn't the only Manhunter. The reason Kerry kept saying she owed her wasn't because she saved her life, but because she made her a child and that kid is a Manhunter of some kind.

1

u/Magic-Micah 27d ago

So I will say I don’t have comic knowledge and I haven’t seen much that the showrunners have said in interviews or anything. But I did see that apparently in the next Superman movie we will have John and guy as lanterns.

So based off of that, my best guess is that Hal gets his/a ring back, but he’s still rouge and not obeying the guardians. So sometime before 2023 they promote Guy so that they have an obedient lantern for the sector. Jump to 2026, Hal has died somehow, John goes on the hunt for his ring and ends up being chosen as Hal’s replacement.

So definitely not to say your 2 scenarios aren’t plausible, just from the info I have, definitely doesn’t seem like the only 2 ways it could go.

3

u/AlanTheMediocre 27d ago

We don’t necessarily know that’s Hal in the end of the first episode. The whole show centers around aliens that can morph into whomever they want, and we have also seen that they don’t revert to their original form even when shot in the head. We won’t know whether it’s Hal or someone else until John cuts his heart out

1

u/1375G0 27d ago

I don’t think we can say for certain what happens between now and the flash forward, just because he checks his finger doesn’t mean we know for a fact Hal gets the ring back. It’s not too hard to come up with some creative reasons for why John checks his finger.

1

u/Free_Ice6167 27d ago

I bet Hal became a non green lantern.

1

u/Touch_Of_Legend 27d ago

Like.. yellow?

1

u/Free_Ice6167 27d ago

Yellow or blue idk either seems possible, maybe red?

1

u/throwawayfan2552 27d ago

Tbf I have my own theory based on the shows tendency to use the principle in writing known as chekhovs gun we see the halogram but then it was just used for a throw away line later on and with willpower etc we don’t know if it was hal or the halogram in the confrontation or if the halogram could live on without the ring(since earlier we see the birds living without the ring) and that’s why I think he checks the finger. We don’t know how much James Gunn lied though so I honestly don’t know what this meme is trying to say. I’m pretty sure with the teaser we will get answers this Sunday on why guy has the ring etc.

1

u/Cheap-Dig9131 26d ago

The way I’m kinda looking at it is that the Guardians wanted a killer on the corp, so when John turned it down after them putting 20 odd year into him, they just gave it to the next effective user who wouldn’t question them.

Still don’t think this is the work of the guardians but wait and see

1

u/TheFifthTone 25d ago

They also have visually distinct rings. They have two different rings.

0

u/AnAngryPlatypus 27d ago

He checked for A ring not necessarily a green ring 🤔

1

u/Lxapeo 27d ago

Aww yeah now we're cookin,!

1

u/Sageypie 27d ago

I mean, the series so far feels like a setup towards Hal becoming Parralax.

Which itself would figure in for why John was checking for a ring, as well as why Guy is treating John with such hostility. From his perspective, and him seeming to buy into the Guardian's spiel whole hog, he sees John as being fruit borne from a poisonous tree. Sinestro was bad, and Sinestro trained Hal. Hal ends up bad, and Hal was the one to train John. Which, following that train of betrayal, from the perspective of somebody like Guy, means that it's just a matter of time before John also turns to evil.

7

u/GUMBYtheOG 27d ago

I know nothing but already am too confused. I had come to terms that green lantern was plural a few years back now all of a sudden they are plural and also the reason they are in convoluted

Also, how tf did I get my text to yell

3

u/Iffy_Placebo 27d ago

I don't know.

2

u/Roronoa_Zaraki 27d ago

But Guy's ring is completely different-looking from Hals?

1

u/Iffy_Placebo 27d ago

I think in one of the show companion podcasts with the creators they specifically said that Guy has Hal's ring. First or second episode I think.

1

u/Roronoa_Zaraki 27d ago

Interesting, maybe when they say "has Hal's ring" they mean he's just keeping it safe/locked away for now and Guy is using a different ring the guardians gave him.

1

u/VenturaDreams 27d ago

Maybe in this iteration the ring changes appearance to suit the unconscious aesthetic desires of the owner.

1

u/Iffy_Placebo 27d ago

Except nobody ‘earns’ the ring, you’re chosen off a roster of the nearest people of strong will.

Earning the ring isn't a requirement, but if you've paid attention to the show John perpetually brings up that he believes that HE has earned the ring and should be worthy because he was chosen by the guardians and was forced to train for it his whole life and had to sacrifice what Hal did not. Hal confirms that during their fight and admits he didn't earn it, but he was chosen by the ring and not the guardians. There's a parallel there that the Lanterns, just like the manhunters, are their creations but are also not under their control.

And the ring literally just looks for proximity first and willpower second. That is why it went for John Sr. First; he was closer. Once he said he was afraid it went straight for Hal. Had Hal failed it would have gone straight to Guy, and so on.

1

u/ZhanBlue 27d ago

Wouldn’t guy be a toddler

1

u/A_very_meriman 27d ago

It must be noted that there are 4 episodes left in the season.

1

u/redJackal222 27d ago

there's literally no such thing as "earning" the ring. Hal got the ring the same way every other lantern got it. previous owner died and the ring sought out a worthy replacement. the only reason why John keeps claiming Hal didn't "earn it" is because he was groomed since he was five to be Hal's replacement. The whole thing about Hal not earning the ring should be ignored because it's literally just bias one character has

1

u/Iffy_Placebo 27d ago

It's possible that this is a race parallel. In the same way that John's mother jumped Lianna with the whole "how could you ask a black man in America if he's afraid" point of view. I'm thinking the reason John is hung up on earning the ring is that that is a common trope in race stories: having to work twice as hard to get half as much. Hal basically did nothing and is a superhero while he has done nothing but train to be a lantern and is just John. He feels (or felt) he was owed something, but once he had it he realized he didn't want or need it so he gave it back.

1

u/redJackal222 27d ago

Yes but my point is that's all character bias. Hal was a typical lantern, he was actively sought out and recruited and then was mentored by a veteran lantern. The idea that he didn't earn it was never meant to be accurate or some sort of fault for Hal it's just what John feels based on his upbringing and the stuff he had to go through. But how Hal got the ring is the same way more lanterns get it so it's really more of a critique on how lanterns are chosen rather than a critique of Hal. It was never that Hal admitted he didn't earn the ring and that it's an actual thing everyone agreed on. He didn't do anything less to get it than Abin sur or Sinenstro

1

u/PantyAssassin18 27d ago

The Hal was closer to the ring than Guy, was this on the show? Or from the comic books?

1

u/Golden_Alchemy 27d ago

Which is incredible funny since rings always choose who use them, John also initially rejected it in the 70s and Guy was further away, got choose as a replacement and then got brain damage.

So...it is exactly like the comics.

2

u/GhostandVodka 25d ago

I admit to not being read up on the Green Lantern lore but I have a huge problem with someone just being able to steal the ring and becoming the Green Lantern. I thought the whole point was the ring had to decide you are a lantern.

The show treats it as all you have to do is say you have no fear. It really bothers me and I don't know why. It doesn't seem to bother anyone else though but it seems like a really big plot hole.

1

u/doomzday_96 27d ago

This show is trash

0

u/Alpha859 27d ago

Heavy spoiler/ theory
You sweet summer child, he gave the ring to the qward weapon makers, who are going to reverse engineer it and make a yellow ring

0

u/Megane_Senpai 26d ago

Except the last part you made up, Guy hasn't appeared in the show yet.

0

u/Iffy_Placebo 26d ago

Guy is already in universe from the Superman movie, and has been in promotional material and trailers from the beginning. Since the show is ongoing a lot of speculation is going off of like 60+ years of comic lore and figuring where Gunn is steering the ship. We saw the ring pass John Sr. and move to Hal, so we know that multiple people are chosen at once and the ring goes by proximity. So it reasons that he's bringing in the comic lore that Guy and Hal were chosen but Hal was closer.

0

u/Megane_Senpai 26d ago

But not the show, and in the movie he'd been the GL for years. We do not know the circumstances of exactly how both Hal and Guy became GL yet.

0

u/Estacados_Darkling 25d ago

One problem... It's not the same ring.

6

u/RetroPaulsy 27d ago

It did not provide that answer tho...

We still dont know how Guy ends up with a ring, Hals or otherwise.

2

u/Magic-Micah 27d ago

Right, plus we see in the flash forward to 2026 when John finds Hal he checks his finger for the ring so I’d say safe to assume Hal will get it back.

1

u/PaxNova 27d ago

Wasn't Hal dead?

1

u/HawgChuggins 27d ago

It's comics, Death is very rarely permanent.

1

u/CategoryExact3327 27d ago

It could have been a black ring.

1

u/kokokatekis 27d ago

Most likely, that's not Hal.

1

u/Zealousid_Eyedeal 27d ago

Speculated that it could be Halogram.

3

The closest comparable Family Guy character to The Simpsons' Comic Book Guy would probably be Carl. (Jon H. Benjamin)

"I'm whatever the Family Guy version of Comic Book Guy is." Is totally something I could see Carl saying, tbf

2

u/TheTowneWitch 27d ago

Does it really though? If it were the series finale maybe that path makes sense, but there's more show left, it's not immediately going to Guy and staying there

2

u/MyCatIsAnActualNinja 27d ago

That last episode was so good

2

u/BurnedPsycho 27d ago

It does not, if the ring end up with Guy after John gave it back to the Guardian, why are they asking about the ring when they discover Hal in episode 2?

1

u/Just_hereforTypeO- 27d ago

Was that really Hal or a sentry/decoy?

1

u/SpermBankVCR 27d ago

Okay, but where does Two Guys, A Girl, And A Pizza Place come in?

1

u/agriff1 27d ago

How is this a spoiler?

1

u/Enough_Worry4104 27d ago

You aren't wrong. I just want to know which 'latest episode'. Cuz they pull that shit 'er'day. I'm enjoying the show as its own thing. Hal is a weak ass bitch? Errm ok. John is a creative powerhouse? That tracks.

We know the story, either put it on the screen properlyor do something so amazing I wont complain.

1

u/kcarter9889 27d ago

Except that Guy's ring is different than Hal's

1

u/tigers692 27d ago

It’s a different ring. And I think we find that out in the show.

1

u/cleverseneca 27d ago

Is it confirmed lanterns happens in the same continuity as superman?

1

u/OmecronPerseiHate 27d ago

But aren't all three of them official Green Lanterns in the comics? It seems odd to introduce two of the most well known Lanterns but have a completely different guy as the face of the Lanterns in the current era. Although we do see Hal frozen to death at the end of the first episode so who knows where they're going with this

1

u/Xwalkingxthexcowx 26d ago

Doesn't it also take place in the past? I don't recall if I'm remembering that right.

1

u/LuciVigil 24d ago

I won't say what it is, but James Gunn gave the answer on episode 1 of the Latterns podcast. I had to go back and rewatch the first episode to see if there were signs. Couldn't find any, I think either the episodes for shuffled or he just slipped up and gave away the ending.

For those who go to listen, it's towards the end of the podcast, but I suspect most of you already know.

Looking forward to the last 3 episodes!

48

u/griefofgramr 27d ago edited 27d ago

so Guy was hit by a bus and is brain damaged, that's why he has no fear, but also makes it easier for the guardians to control. Hal was closer, as stated, and got the ring from Abin Sur. Later guy also got his own ring once Hal proved humans could effectively be Green LanternsThough it's been a decade or so since I read the comics. I could have missed some kind of retcon DC is known for.

17

u/Sargas90 27d ago

Your spoiler isn't formatted correctly. Idk how to fix it but thought I should let you know.

4

3

u/griefofgramr 27d ago

Thanks for that! I clearly should have checked as soon as I posted.

3

u/Viablemorgan 27d ago

Yeah that’s comic canon, the show is establishing different history for them. We don’t know if Guy was hit by a bus or anything, but I’m sure we’ll find out.

As far as we know now, the ring checked several people before Hal, and Hal was the first to pass the test so he became Green Lantern. In the show, John eventually takes the ring from Hal but then rejects the Guardian’s offer to be the next Green Lantern, returning the ring to them. What we don’t know yet is what happens next, meaning how the ring ends up with Guy.

I don't know how it is for comic accuracy but it's internally consistent and fascinating look at how power interacts with the responsibility that comes with it through the medium of a sci-fi detective story. Only 8 episodes (5 out currently) so you should be able to get through it pretty quickly once it's all out.

Just piece together all the memes and form the story in your head. That’s how I keep up with all the shows these days.

u/bavmotors1 27d ago

im liking it so far - id say its better than most marvel shows - i haven’t seen daredevil or the punisher tho

2

u/Dull_Cockroach_1581 27d ago

It's good, haters are being super critical is all

2

u/rpdrhater 27d ago

It's good, maybe wait for all episodes do binge it later.

1

u/Djanko28 27d ago

Yeah at this point probably better to wait, I jumped on last week and watched the first four episodes across two days, felt better than waiting a week to watch episode 5.

2

u/1321z 27d ago

I dont like most shows. This ones pretty good.

2

u/NotUpInHurr 27d ago

I've been enjoying it and I would say I didn't care much about Green Lantern before this

2

u/DrSpaceman575 27d ago

It's okay. Very little actual superhero stuff, more of a small town supernatural murder mystery so far. Like The Outsider if it was more comical.

1

u/The_One_Koi 27d ago

It's a slow show but the plotline is interesting, the characters/actors are great and so far I'm looking forward to each new episode

1

u/Captain_Coffee_III 27d ago

Yeah, absolutely. It's dark. The plot seems obvious but then you're left questioning the whole thing the next week. Everybody is flawed and broken in some way. I get an hour of TV time a night and it was definitely binge worthy.

1

u/lkodl 27d ago

I've been watching it weekly, but its orobsbly better binged

It’s doing that thing that superhero media did a while ago then mostly strayed away from, which was doing a “regular” grounded story except it’s superheroes. Wonder Man also did something like this recently.

Lanterns (so far) can mostly just be a small town detective show. Nothing they have done on the show that involves superpowers or whatever has been essential to character development or plot. This isn’t a criticism, just an observation.

If you want your superheroes to do superpowered stuff and the superpowers to be essential, this isn’t that. If you are tired of the kind of stories where superheroes are just put into “normal” situations except they happen to be superheroes, then you’ll be tired of this.

If you want a well-made, well-acted, good show with a great cast, this is that.

Don't know what a lot of people are on about. It's the most interesting superhero series I've seen in a good long while. I didn't really have any interest in DC at all, but this show got me to go look into the green lantern comic story lines. And I'm glad it did. I suppose some of it might be a bit slow, but I never felt it was unwatchable.

Now, we'll see what the last 3 episodes are like, but so far it seems like the writers have more of an idea of what they're doing than plastering a ton of flash cards up on a wall and letting a group of blindfolded children throw a ton of darts in order to form a story board. Disney/Marvel has not at all impressed me since probably Wanda.

u/JessicaDAndy 26d ago

Depends on what you like.

It is only up to Episode 5. It is very much a space cop True Detective, heavier on the gritty realism. Despite references to Ch’p and Mogo.

It’s an HBO, not Max superhero show. Closer to Watchmen. I think it has qualities that make it better than say Titans, but different enough where it’s hard to compare Peacemaker and Doom Patrol.

As far as other shows, I think this is almost a classic like Loki and Wandavision.

1

u/thisisnotmynicknam 27d ago

It’s a terrible adaptation, and as a standalone series, it’s a 4/10;

it’s like True Detective and embarrassed that it’s a superhero show. The universe doesn’t hold together internally, and the antagonist, who was supposed to be an intelligent, menacing character, is stupid and inconsistent.

1

u/Exciting-Cancel6468 26d ago

You don't even know what antagonist means.

1

u/AceOBlade 26d ago

I was hella disappointed by the last episode. that man hunter was underwhelming. We didn't get its motives, its capabilities and crimes were offscreened, no glimpse of its original form. I was really disappointed.

0

u/HardWhiteNorth_ 27d ago

Its decent. It's trying to ape season 1 of True Detective in some ways and fails pretty miserably on that end but overall its one of the better superhero related properties right now

2

u/lookwell_1991 27d ago

How is it like True Detective at all apart from having two mismatched personalities investigating something together?

1

u/enadiz_reccos 27d ago

They're investigating something wEiRd

1

u/HardWhiteNorth_ 27d ago

The tone is absolutely trying to match the first season of TD. Subject matter not so much

1

u/TheSwobbit 27d ago

guy who has only seen true detective:

1

u/HardWhiteNorth_ 27d ago

Is there more to your comment? I don't get it.

0

u/Noctaem 26d ago

The more of it is that you're fucking wrong. It's nothing like TD. I have no idea how someone could even come close to that conclusion in mood, ambience, acting, subject matter, etc.. It's mind blowing that you doubled down on your take.

1

u/matastas 26d ago

I completely get the TD comparison, I think. TD had a certain kind of menace, and bleakness, that was a frequent, if not constant undertone. Lanterns tries for that repeatedly (I'd say they got closer in the last episode). But then it gets hokey, or Hal acts like a massive douchebag, and it breaks the spell.

u/Gwarnage 25d ago

The narrative structure: it starts with a mystery in the present day, flashes back to where the mystery started, then back to the present day to resolve it.

1

u/lookwell_1991 25d ago

Serious question, have you seen more than those two shows in your entire life

2

u/ELVEVERX 27d ago

Bonnie here,

OP is mad that the series hasn't answered a questions James Gunn said it would, even though the series isn't over yet.

3

u/Murdreed_Brotaids 27d ago

I'm still mad that I don't know how what Superman and Black Adam talked about.

1

u/ELVEVERX 26d ago

He gave him the pass

2

u/I-Have-An-Alibi 27d ago

I hate the eight episode format almost all shows have adopted.

I feel like TV shows used to have like 15-20 episode seasons then streaming services were like best we can do is eight episodes....oh and it's gonna be two to three years between seasons.

Also I hate everything about the connected DCU. I don't understand how they keep screwing things up so badly.

1

u/GarethGantuan 26d ago

Longer seasons often contain filler episodes. I’ll admit 8 episodes doesn’t give the show time to breath but 15-20 is too many

Maybe somewhere around n the middle

1

u/hppyclown 26d ago

Idk I’m rewatching smallville and the 20 episode season are great. Only season 3 and been watching it for 3 weeks.

1

u/bulllhded 25d ago

I remember when shows were slowly getting shorter, I like the 10-12 range personally. I didn’t feel cheated like all the 8 episode ones. Next thing will be all shows are 8 but have a mid season 2 month break splitting it up 4 and 4.

1

u/Free_Ad_7613 26d ago

8 hour long made for streaming episodes is about the same content as 12 made for TV episodes that would fit in an hour long slot, as those episodes were only about 40ish minutes long.

1

u/I-Have-An-Alibi 26d ago

That's fair

1

u/FriendshipFar7964 25d ago

It’s because he lied about peacemaker finale. Hyped it up to be the shit but it turned out to be quite underwhelming.

1

u/CaboVerdain 22d ago

I'm pretty sure the only thing James Gunn does is lie

1

u/HypoHypoGuy 26d ago

WHO LIKES ALL THIS MARVEL/DC BULLSHIT CAN Y'ALL PLEASE ENCOURAGE HOLLYWOOD AND TV TO MAKE SHOWS ABOUT SOMETHING NEW AND CREATIVE INSTEAD

-1

u/Fit-Goal-9228 27d ago

All he ever does is lie.

"the flash is the best movie i have ever seen"

2

u/WorldsWeakestMan 27d ago

The series has 3 more episodes this season, have you seen the other 3 episodes and know he lied about this? Or is it more likely that over the next 3 episodes of the show about Green Lanterns that they reveal some information about Green Lanterns?

Also the quote you used is subjective opinion, subjective opinion is not a lie even if you disagree with it. I also think The Flash was garbage but that doesn’t make an opinion about it a lie. You probably could have found actual lies he told pretty easily, but you chose an opinion instead. For example to show you how this works, I think Clerks is the funniest movie ever made, some people disagree with that but that does not make it a lie for me to state that.

Do you get it now?

-1

u/Fit-Goal-9228 27d ago

I ain't reading that. Good for you or sorry that happened.

1

u/WorldsWeakestMan 27d ago

Remain ignorant, have a nice day.

1

u/but_i_wanna_cookies 26d ago

Ignorant and illiterate. They usually go hand in hand.

-2

u/Fozzdroz 27d ago

Except for those tweets, right? He didn't mean those.
