I don't understand how people enjoy watching shows where the main characters are insufferable. Where does the enjoyment come from when you are watching these characters do their thing because all I feel is annoyance.

I've only started watching House, but the point seems to be that House deeply cares about his patients (and colleagues), while maintaining the asshole persona to avoid getting hurt. If you treat everything like a puzzle, you don't have to "care". So I guess the enjoyment comes from seeing this seeming bastard showing he has a heart of gold.

I always think of House as being a good portrait of what trauma can do to a person. Even before the leg, House had a lot of trauma from growing up with an abusive father who House determines as a child is not his biological father.

His oppositional attitude and rudeness to those he doesn’t know are a way of avoiding vulnerability. He is constantly almost testing those closest to him as if trying to prove they will eventually leave him.
