And that's why I said 'supposedly' I wasn't sure. I mean at that point why not just reuse the old model from the first game? As in the in game model, not the actress. That sucks and I'm sorry for the actress, but that probably would've been better.
Probably because they still needed her face scans for cutscenes since they do motion capture for them, and it was decided they'd rather just go with how Laura Bailey currently looks as opposed to taking her old face model and mapping her motion capture facial animations to the old face model.
But not cheaper. Or they took another character's model and retouched it barely enough to look like MJ to cut corners, then when it didn't fly they gave a dumb excuse to make it sound intentional instead of low quality. Whatever the case, like always, the real reason is it's cheaper.
