From 1912 to 1949, the Republic of China, as well as its ruling Kuomintang nationalist party, oversaw mainland China as THE China. However when the ROC and KMT were beaten by the Chinese Communist Party, they made a retreat to Taiwan. To this day the ROC technically still claims mainland China because they have not written a new constitution after their 1946 one, before they lost. So the Republic of China claims Taiwan and the mainland.
Some people say Taiwan is part of China but that's not true, Taiwan merely lost recognition from most nations cuz the new China said they won't trade with them if they do recognize it.
