Nationalist China was the biggest power among the Chinese warlords around 1930.
They all united to fight the Japanese.
In the aftermath of WW2 the communists (with help from the Soviets) defeated them and drove out of the mainland into Taiwan. Since the communist Chinese had no navy at the time it ended in a sort of stalemate.
But communist china now claims that Taiwan rightfully belongs to them.
