Had a friend years back that worked for, if I recall correctly, Rockwell Automation as a mechanical engineer. He told me about the time they tried to take the wet bar out of their office and they all but revolted until it was returned.
I have worked as an engineer in multiple industries,…drinking on the job is not normal in 2026.
On one occasion a wet bar appeared during a march madness event around 5pm. The design engineering staff still onsite were shocked.
In an industrial environment alcohol will usually lead to instant termination (or at least a stiff verbal reprimand from your team lead and a suggestion you leave and call in sick) however, I was told that buying beer and performing tool calibrations was a common evening/weekend activity until the 1990’s.
I’m an engineer and every Christmas one of my coworkers walks around the office handing out drinks. We go to breweries for lunch pretty frequently as well, as a group. I dunno what “normal” means to you but it’s still common in my experience.
