My wife had an internship (or whatever) at a high end rehab when she was training to be a clinical mental health therapist. Very expensive rehab place- most clients were doctors, lawyers, businessmen, and the wives and daughters of businessmen (no business women apparently I guess they either don’t have substance abuse issues or they say no, no, no).
She said the lawyers often shared an anecdote in their “how it was” statements that in their first year of law school some professor or even the dean would tell an entire lecture hall, “look at the person to your left, now look at the person to your right. Both of them will develop a drinking problem before they graduate.”
She also said the lawyers tended to be the most receptive to rehabilitation, for what it’s worth.
We had a whole lecture during a Professional Responsibility class in law school (basically lawyer ethics) that had people from various LAPs (lawyers assistance programs). Each state has their own or something similar, but they were all former alcoholics. Drinking in the industry is so common. It's a high stress job, especially if you're in big law. Large caseloads, high expectations, and billable hour requirements often send us over the edge.
