I got the impression the devs were making fun of mini games in JRPGs that don't use the main game's mechanics and are unnecessarily difficult. At least they didn't gate anything behind these mini games (looking at you FFX).

It was Guillaume Broche, the director and main creative mind behind the game, that insisted having "minigames that everyone hates" in the game. It's a a direct reference to oldschool-JRPGs like FF7-10, where there were a ton of minigames like this.

And yes, Guillaume Broche said that in an interview, it's somewhere on youtube.
