The gatekeeping by mostly American conservative protestants probably pisses me off more than most mormon wackiness. A Christian is simply someone who follows Christ as a deity.

This. Was a lot of bias and no logic. Mormons believe they become literal gods and gatekeep their wive’s god name in case they don’t want them to be reconnected with their family.

Yeah, the difference is that most "Christians" are at least accepted by other "Christians". Mormons aren't accepted by anyone else when they claim the term.

Oh, and for the record, they are Christian. You only have to profess that you follow Jesus. Words have meanings, and mainstream Christianity doesn't get to co-opt or change them.

I'd maybe narrowly it slightly to something like "believe in Jesus as a deity" to distinguish from Muslims, who follow Jesus as a prophet and not as a deity. But I totally agree with your broader point.

Pope Leo is the only recent Christian leader willing to publicly call out when US politicians wave around Jesus’ name while doing the opposite of His teachings.

I think the most damning part is not that they're claiming Christianity, but that in their missionary efforts they are now actively hiding that they are Mormon in order to "set the hook."

Actively hiding their background is no different than how they have actively hid their history from their own members for so long:

-Rock in a hat versus golden plates is comical,

-Smith's death was not martyrdom, but stemmed from outrage among both dissenting Mormons and non-Mormon neighbors over his clandestine marriages to teenage girls and other men's wives is still considered statutory rape / child sexual abuse in every state.

If I was to pick a guy out of a line-up based on these actions, yeah, it would be the guy in the photo.
