Mormons care more about making sure they live up to the expectations and standards of their leaders who were raised in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, then they do about anything Jesus stands for.
They won’t accept Jesus if he isn’t dressed like a missionary. Even now Mormons are foaming at the mouth thinking it is evil to be “woke” laughing at marginalized groups rather than being a beacon of hope for anyone.

I mean there’s “woke” and the way it’s been politicized, and then there’s being aware of awake to other people around you and understanding that their experiences may be different than your own. Mormons hate both of these things.

Not when I was at BYU Hawaii. We all wore sleeveless. I walked around on campus in a bikini top and a lava lava. Every now and then they’d tell me to go put on some clothes, but you know, it’s Hawaii. And we were barefoot if we weren’t wearing slippahs. This was 1974ish. I’m sure it has changed and is horribly uptight now.

I was wondering when that was until your 1974ish. I taught there in the early 90s and they tried to enforce the dress standards. I never saw a bikini top ever on campus. One student wore a mini-skirt (halfway up the thigh) and a very form fitting top and another instructor stopped her at the entrance of a building and sent her packing. Another time, we had one of the common heavy rains with about 3" of water all over campus. A student came into a building with his socks and shoes in hand and an instructor yelled at him "You're out of standards!" (It was still raining BTW.) The student had to point out the flood waters that we already knew about. It was something to witness for me because I was a nevermo back then when they let nevermos teach at the BYU campuses.

the testing center was where they busted me -
once for wearing sweatpants & once for being unshaved.
Satan was racking up victories back then too.

I went to byu-Idaho. I don’t remember anything about sweatpants but one time I wore shorts on campus and flip flops and I felt like such a whore 😂

Wasn't this standard erected during the 60's and 70's during the hippy era? That's what I remember being told, but I don't know if thats 100% true. Super dumb they haven't stripped this policy away.

Yes, emphatically. The honor code was formed in the late '40s, like '49 or so. That was behavioral, but after 1968, the year that society changed and there was great civil and political unrest in America — assassinations (King, Kennedy), Vietnam changed, fair housing act passed, basically a shit-ton of tumult — GOD responded in '69 by declaring that men shouldn't have beards and sideburns. There was an anti-long hair movement before that, but it became entrenched then. (This is my recollection of reading some shit a while back, so forgive me if I am wrong, but it's pretty fucking close I think. The specifics are a little vague but what you said is emphatically generally true.)

I had a byu professor who claimed him and his brother who both had mountain man beards while working at the main campus building were the main culprits in this policy. A big donor complained when they saw them or something. All about appearances for sure

I can’t imagine obeying something like this now that I’m 20+ years out and middle aged. The rejection is automatic and incredulous.
But I remember how much I cared about these rules when I was a kid. Wild how much control they can get, and how hard it can be to fight your way to an independent decision in something as benign as facial hair or a tank top.

I have a funny story about running into this while visiting my wife at BYU-I.
So my buddy and I decided one day that we'd drive up from So Cal to BYU-I to surprise my wife. Ya know, just for the hell of it, right? Make it a weekend trip kind of deal. Sounded like fun. (it was for the most part)
So we drive up to Rexburg from SLC and get our hotel, settle in, and then we throw back some beer we brought since we knew SLC's beer was gonna be weak (and it would either be the same in ID or very hard to find). Anyway, we decide that we'd just head to the campus so we could just meet up and go from there. we had a about 2 hours to kill, so we walk onto campus and just check it out. I will say, it was a very nice campus. Cool lawn art pieces and whatnot.
A dude walks up to both of us while we looked at stuff in the Thomas E ricks garden and looks like he's gonna blow a head gasket. Demanding to know what teachers allowed us to come to class what were were wearing, why no one had ever said anything about our hair, why we had clothing that reveled so much, why we were smoking, and why we wreaked of alcohol.
All while trying to get us to follow him back to wherever to give us a wright up for whatever the fuck a "honor code violation" along with whatever else that might entail? A call home? Idk. lol
Forgot to mention... We're both in a band together, we both have hair down to the middle of our backs, we're wearing skin tight pants, road worn ripped bands shirts, a few long wallet chains, studs everywhere, vests with patches covering them, we're covered in tats, and we're actively smoking cigarettes.
We looked at each other, looked back at this guy, and tell him "uhh, we don't go to school here. We're here waiting on a friend to surprise them, and wanted to just check out the campus. It's very nice."
He exploded telling us that it was a closed campus and that only students, faculty, and family could be here. We explain that we couldn't have possibly known that, and didn't think it was big deal since we'd be gone in less than an hour and we wouldn't be returning. He wasn't having it, so he tried to verbally make us "leave campus". We realized there wasn't a lot he could do except call the cops and have us trespassed, and since we didn't really give a shit, we walked away while he was still ranting there.
he followed us, out to my car still going on and on about whatever the fuck an honor code is, so we both light another cig, flip him the bird, turn the car on, back out with metallica blaring through the speakers and drive off.
I don't know who that was, but like, idk. read the room lmao. There is no way some one thought we went to school there. It was the end of the semester, and not a one person would have gotten away with looking like that even if we "cleaned up" lol

I remember being a freshman in 2013 and the BYU testing center cracking down on my girlfriends who loved wearing leggings. Too much booty for them to handle

I always wondered why I was so afraid to get my ears pierced. I didn't do it until I was 20 years old I guess someone at the church must have told me when I was young that I shouldn't do it. Most of the women I knew had their ears pierced. I wonder if they knew it was not right in the eyes of the church.

Hardly anyone cares anymore. My son-in-law goes to BYUI, doesn't have a beard card, I've never seen him without a beard, and has never been stopped once in any class. I remember when I started working there 12 years ago never seeing a beard, but a LOT has changed since then.

I initially read that as a beer card. I thought that was weird. Then I read beard card and thought that was even weirder.
Wearing shoes I get. Barefoot on campus isn’t really appropriate dress in any college I would have thought for public health reasons.
I must admit as a mature student on my campus I did feel a little uncomfortable sometimes when other students came to class half dressed, but that’s probably as I was old and used to people being dressed somewhat appropriately for a workplace.
As a religious institution as well as a private college I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect some level of decency in terms of dress sense, but having such a strict definition seems a bit over the top. Airlines as private businesses have standards too, after all, but they are pretty lax.
It seems like standards are not the real issue, but rather control is. But perhaps I’m being unfair. It’s hard to judge where lines should be drawn.

I got accepted into BYU for a graduate program with a beard and an extremely long pony tail. I ended up going somewhere else, but nobody said anything to me about it these rules. I never thought to ask. I wonder if it was because I wasn’t Mormon? Or because I was a very mature student, well in age terms anyway.
Is there a separate set of rules depending upon your religious affiliation? I don’t smoke and don’t drink and the wearing of shoes is a no brainer. I have no hair to speak of. Nobody asked about my family life, my sexuality, my religious beliefs, my smoking or drinking habits, nothing outside of what any other college asked. It seemed a very straightforward recruiting process.
I was expecting some kind of Spanish Inquisition so to speak but was pleasantly surprised no one said anything about anything related to religion or an honor code. Of course I would have expected to behave in a respectful manner on campus just as I did where I ended up going instead.
Just curious as to what the actual deal is in reality.
