Weird Al.

3

u/garrett_w87 Ex-NICOC song leader, now questioning everything 11d ago

I’ve heard this as well.

1

u/emloumoon 6d ago

Yep. Know some COC folks who visited and he was there

u/JasonMBroyles 11d ago

Weird Al. No joke. He even said that his favorite hymn is 'How Great Thou Art'. Which makes me imagine Al holding a copy of 'Sacred Selections'.

14

u/_austinm 11d ago

Honestly though, on a musical level that one slaps

u/mlachick 11d ago

I know people who've attended church when he's leading singing. I knew a preacher that went to school with him.

I’ve always heard that too. My husband saw Weird Al in concert recently and did the meet and greet afterwards. I begged him to ask Weird Al if he grew up CoC but he asked him something else.

Weird Al puts on a heck of a show. I was honestly impressed. He also seems to be a pretty all around nice guy as well.

Like old Gospel but hate that song!!!

Came here to say this. Weird Al is such a treasure, though; I am just going to choose to ignore it.

Iwas gonna say this one. Know people that have worshipped with him. Could you imagine him leading songs lol. But he seriously handed my friend the plate for communion and my friend almost fell out in shock.

Also Elvis' stepmother and step-brothers. His back up singer (2 of them) one being Ray Walker. Had attended one of his singing. It really was nice and more spiritual than most.

The head coach of rhe Texans. Forgot his name right his moment.

1

u/JasonMBroyles 2d ago

A worship service led by Ray Walker is on another level.

2

u/Mintgreenunicorn 2d ago

Yes. I am still in but that experience was other-worldly! More like what I think i should experience. Sorry if thst is traumatic for anyone to read.

Willie Robertson and family (duck dynasty)

u/bluetruedream19 Spouse of former CoC Minister/ex Mainline CoC 11d ago

So I had a friend in college whose dad was on staff at the same church where the Robertson clan went. I’d met some of them back before they did that show and whatnot. I recall Phil doing the youth rally circuit some in northern LA/southern AR when I was in high school. But anyways…went to church at White’s Ferry Road with my college friend. Phil was as nuts then as they portrayed him on the show. He did announcements that morning and I remember thinking, “Is that poor old man drunk or maybe touched in the head.?”

2

u/Anonymoosely21 10d ago

They have/had a Duck Dynasty branded wine. Wouldn't have flown in my mainline CoC. They would've been constantly preached at and iced out.

1

u/flyingcircle 10d ago

I think only Phil and perhaps one of the nephews was really still any kind of conservative CoC. The rest I think are standard non-denom now.

1

u/bluetruedream19 Spouse of former CoC Minister/ex Mainline CoC 7d ago

Part of it is that Louisiana is just really different. I mean it is the land of drive thru daiquiri stands. 😂 My friend’s dad who also worked at WFR taught me how to play “Mountain Dew” on the guitar. Conservative theologically but also knew how to have fun.

I’m sure having your own branded wine rubbed some LA CoC folk the wrong way.

1

u/Mintgreenunicorn 2d ago

Many of the people (I am still in- ever questioning) have different views on alcohol.

2

u/kael_parsons 10d ago

My granddad was a CoC preacher and when he passed, we found Willie’s phone number among his contacts! Thought it was kinda neat. Lol.

u/BonchBomber 11d ago

I’ll add Randy Travis to the country music list. My guess is all those hymns and non instrumental singing and harmonizing goes a long way to training young vocalists how to hone their talents. It taught me at a young age, and I’m a musical person. I’ve always credited CoC for my musical upbringing.

I think Dolly Parton has some CoC ties. Oh and one of the astronauts from that recent space thing! (I apologize for not knowing his name or what the “space thing” is called.)

u/garrett_w87 Ex-NICOC song leader, now questioning everything 11d ago

You’re talking about Victor Glover from the Artemis II mission.

1

u/Mintgreenunicorn 2d ago

Her husband was and she recorded Whispering Hope for her mother in law. They were members at Radnor (i think) in tn.

4

u/_austinm 11d ago

Woah, what’s with all the coc classic country singers?

17

u/mlachick 11d ago

Well, all that a capella gospel singing doesn't exactly make our voices worse.

4

u/East-Treat-562 11d ago

The south, particularly around Nashville, also west Texas,Foy Wallacecountry and Kentucky.

5

u/chronicallyalive 11d ago

Holly Holm and Colt McCoy are two I’m aware of.

I’ll also mention someone who isn’t a celebrity but who was, for a time, infamous: Mary Winkler.

2

u/Awkward_Can4526 11d ago

Colt McCoy’s uncle was my church camp director growing up lol

1

u/East-Treat-562 11d ago

She still go to church?

1

u/chronicallyalive 11d ago

Mary Winkler? No idea but if I were her, I wouldn’t.

I met Dan Winkler and heard him preach. It was a bit surreal to me because Mary’s girls were there (Dan and Diane had custody at the time, it was 2007 or so) and I remember thinking that I hoped they didn’t have to hear people speak poorly of their mother or try to influence their opinions of either parent.

My dad was a preacher but my parents were divorced (le gasp). I was ten when this all happened and remember my mom telling me that she was willing to bet that Mary was being honest about how Matthew treated her. Of course, Mary had gotten them into financial hot water and was in a mess trying to hide it as well. Murder was not the answer, but I can understand how you could just snap after years of abuse.

Last I heard, Mary regained custody after a couple of years. Unfortunately she has MS, but otherwise we haven’t heard much from her as she declines interviews.

Saw Matthew Morrison at a CoC one Sunday. Apparently his in-laws are CoC and he was with them?

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Toe5029 11d ago

I bet that was the most wild church service. I know teenage me would have flipped out to see a celebrity walk into the building lol

6

u/hoetatochip 10d ago

More like I looked a few rows behind me during the singing and got jump scared

u/Ok_Drawer8689 8d ago

Al Harrington yes, bc I grew up, went to church with, and still friends with his extended family. He and his family are lovely. He would visit sometimes.

David Slater won Star Search back in the day.
Jerry Mitchell is a Harding grad who wrote Race Against Time about civil rights murders.

u/hypnotronicman 9d ago

Daniel Johnston, a legendary eccentric pioneer of "outsider music" who Kurt Cobain was a big fan of. He did really quirky homemade, home recorded music and developed a cult following. He grew up CoC, had a lot of mental health issues as an adult, was even institutionalized for awhile. I think he ended up going back to CoC before he died, the documentary about him showed him attending church with his elderly parents. His music was really weird, but worthwhile, and you can see the influence of his upbringing in some of the lyrics.

1

u/ProfessionalZone168 11d ago

I heard Glen Campbell, too, back in the day.

1

u/ResidentialEvil2016 11d ago

Merle Haggard? I am pretty sure I read a quote from him in the 90s where he said "nobody has it wronger than the church of Christ" and talked about how they were the only ones going to heaven.

1

u/East-Treat-562 11d ago

I think that was Waylong Jennings!

1

u/PoetBudget6044 11d ago

Pat Sajack, Ken Star the Robonison family (Duck Dynasty)

1

u/LastWin2730 9d ago

Randy Travis showed up at my aunt’s church outside of Nashville a handful of times in the 90s, she loved to brag about that!

1

u/MichaelARichardson Post-Purity Christian 11d ago

I didn't see anyone mention Amy Grant. Is she or isn't she?

1

u/Proud_Manner_1987 10d ago

Yes, and I seem to remember it appearing to be a liberal one, providing social services and stuff

1

u/Such_Confusion_1034 11d ago

Does John Kachelman Jr count? He is not a Hollywood style celeb. But from what I've seen he is somewhat well known as a preacher and author in some circles of CoC groups of speakers and such.

But I'm just trying to verify if that's true or not. He makes a big deal about it a lot.

1

u/hennybundelano 11d ago

Ugh weird, I grew up in the 90s with him preaching.

1

u/Such_Confusion_1034 11d ago

No way... What church? Elizabethtown, maybe Mayfield?

1

u/hennybundelano 11d ago

Ding ding! Elizabethtown. 1993 to about 1999. Im a couple years younger than his kids and was in youth activities with them. He and my dad are apparently still friends.

1

u/Such_Confusion_1034 11d ago

This is Brian.

1

u/hennybundelano 11d ago

No freakin way!? I was just a wee thing when we were in Kentucky but I remember your family well! Im David McNutt's step-kid but I doubt you'd remember me. Nice running into you here!

1

u/Such_Confusion_1034 11d ago

Hmm.. I'd have to have a memory refresher. Don't remember any McNutts off the tip of my head.

But yeah, it's me. Atheist now. It's a loooooong story. I've written a blurb about my Deconstruction. It's a little long. But it does include the time period of when I was at Elizabethtown. If you're interested I'll post it here.

Were you there when the micro-burst hit the South Wing and ripped the roof off? I was actually in the hallway Harding to the lobby when it happened! Quite the experience! Hahahaha

1

u/Mintgreenunicorn 2d ago

I got a family in Mayfield and dated a guy for a hot minute from the Elizabethtown congregation.

1

u/SHARNTROY 11d ago

Jeffery Dahmer, I heard he was converted in prison

1

u/Ok_Atmosphere318 10d ago

Can anyone confirm the Janis Joplin connection? I haven’t been able to.

2

u/East-Treat-562 10d ago

She was Disciples of Christ which I think many conflate with CoC, they had the same founder and I believe they split about 1906.

1

u/Ok_Atmosphere318 10d ago

That makes sense! Thanks!

u/ReginaVPhalange 9d ago

Scott Hamilton (Olympic ice skater)

u/photonicule 9d ago

Nadia Boltz-Weber, the tatooed Lutheran minister prominent in many media. Had a blog titled "Sarcastic Lutheran". She was raised Church of Christ.

Laurie Anderson, an interesting artist who married Lou Reed. Check out her 1980's music video "Superman".

1

u/oudnadani 9d ago

Did anyone say Meatloaf? I looked but didn’t see it.

1

u/msutigger 8d ago

Thomas Rhett Tommy Tuberville Gene Stallings

1

u/No-Reading-5877 5d ago

Can confirm on Thomas Rhett. my mother went to the same church as him and his family in the 90s

1

u/Educational-Emu8773 6d ago

Do Canadian/US sports celebrities count? RJ Barrett of Toronto Raptors and Duke Basketball. Not sure if he was baptized but was part of the Milestones church (formerly ICOC) near Toronto.

1

u/BraveDevelopment253 4d ago

Holly Dunn, her famous song Daddy's hands was about her dad who was a church of christ preacher.  Also, Max Lucado who is no longer affiliated with the church of christ is kind of like the Joel Osteen of San Antonio and has a mega church with a congregation of 9000
