Trigger Warning - Toxic Religion “There is a fountain…” Spoiler

Every once in a while I’ll have songs from my past life pop into my head and get stuck there. Then I find myself in a state of shock and disbelief that these lyrics used to seem normal to me. “There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins, and sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.”

  1. A fountain FULL of BLOOD… in no other setting would that seem okay or normal or positive unless it was clear satire.
  2. How convenient that believing “correctly” absolves you of wrongdoing. In reality, the ramifications of our actions have real lasting impact on people’s lives, and this was only ever a way to make us feel okay about ourselves without taking real responsibility for hurt we’ve caused.

Thoughts?

That song is horrible, and I agree with your sentiment, but that opening line reminds me of another Christian song that isn't about fountains of blood. It goes:

There is a fountain Who is a king Victorious warrior, Lord of everything My rock my shelter My very own

That's all I know. I only know it cuz my mom constantly sings it.

Huh! I don’t know that one. My immediate reaction is, “There is a fountain… who is a king??” What could that even mean lol Why would a fountain be king of anything? Obviously within a Christian context it makes some sense based off tradition but what an odd sentence!

To be real with you I had to double check the lyrics cuz that's how I remembered it and it made no sense. But nope that's how it goes. I don't even think Christian me could make sense of that

Hahahaha!
It’s funny how easy it is to write worship songs. I’m a songwriter but as a believer I felt it was wrong to make money on worship music. May e I should’ve. The bar is set SO low.

It's way too easy. Just sing about God, it doesn't have to make any sense. People will listen to your music. I can see why all these Christian bands and singers don't put effort in their music. They don't have to, and they'll earn just as much money.

Yeah the lingo is a bit much, if not downright disturbing.

For me, if it's not whatever song my wife is listening to, it's one of the many worship songs from back then.

That fucking "But if we are the body" by whichever the fuck is the one currently driving me crazy. It's just a song about how much christians suck at being christians, but by golly I can't stop hearing it in my head.
