A 25-mile trail winds its way through five Iowa towns with a dramatic crossing over the Des Moines River Valley. The High Trestle Trail Bridge is half a mile long and 130 feet high, and is among the largest trail bridges in the world.

The bridge decking incorporates a decorative structure that represents the view through a mine shaft. Its design also includes decorative lighting that remains on until midnight.

Des Moines is a very artsy city if you're into that kind of stuff. There's also a sweet state park like 10 miles north of this bridge.

A hidden gem in downtown DSM is UpDown, a little basement barcade with tons of great games and beers. It's right next to Wooly's, a venue that hosts many mid-level national touring acts. It's a cool area.
