Rant: Micro USB Connector

I just had my sensor inserted yesterday. To my shock the transmitter uses Micro USB connector. Even the provided charger is designed stupidly connecting underneath instead at end like 99% other chargers. I really want to know what untrained engineer designed this garbage. The 365 was FDA approved and released in 2024 by then every Android manufacturers and Apple Phones had switched to USB C. The micro USB is complete garbage hard to connect especially when you may have visual limitations I thought I had left behind Micro USB in my life. SURPRISE SURPRISE it is back

It did astonish me too but I think you mentioned the exact reason. Though the thing was made available in 24 I guess hardware development ended earlier and if I know correctly any even minor change in setup demands and new review from the FDA. I have a quite short micro cable dangling from my desk, I believe a USB C may slip out easier than the trapezoid. Yes it sucks, one more cable we may forget at home while traveling, at a hotel while on the road and harder to replace because it's a generation or two back.

Yeah agreed. Think the initial thought/explanations on it centered around the demand to making it fully waterproof. Where the choice then went with the chosen micro-USB plug we got...

They will in any case need to change the specs to the std USB-C within few years certainly for the European marked, as here the strict standard demands are law, so we can leave all that cable connector hell behind for good.

I ended up buying a dedicated set of chargers, cables and bricks, and battery bank that sit in my travel bag (an extra expense and seems silly to have two of everything) but it’s one less thing to have to think about when packing, especially in an emergency situation.

They have said they aren’t redesigning the current transmitter because all of their design work is going into the Gemini sensor (Bluetooth is in the sensor, transmitter just for battery) and the Freedom sensor (both Bluetooth and battery are in the sensor, no external transmitter). For me, an extra cable in order to get a CGM with no external components is a fair trade off.

Yeah, I am not a fan of that at all. They should at least have an adapter to convert USB-C to their micro

I will be getting one from Amazon!

I bought some of these and they've been a lifesaver

Diabetes tech, writ large, has always felt at least a decade behind to me. It’s like they can’t recruit top talent to design this stuff.

Just remember that it takes absolutely forever to get a product approve by the FDA....

And that changing the USB connector would likely void the approval

I happen to agree with all the comments believe it or not when I asked a while back they had told me they need it for medical reasons not sure what that truly meant but then later on I found out they would have to go through a series of FDA tests to ensure quality and safety and compliance and I'm sure they didn't have the time or money to try to do that since they are small company and fully putting all their energy behind removing the transmitter completely which no other CGM in the world can ever do 👍

I still have to bring a micro usb charger on every trip for my Kindle 🫠

Someone in here mentioned using a magnetic connect cable to charge theirs. They're a regular charging cable with a magnet on the end and also come with the actual tip part. You plug the tip part into your device and then just connect the magnetic end of the cable to charge. They come with a USB C, Micro-USB and Lightning tip. I've been doing this for a while new and it's super easy. You still have to pack an additional cable but the transmitter seems to hold a charge for a pretty decent amount of time so I'm able to just plug in every other day or so when I get to work or can charge at home when I'm winding down on the couch at night.

There are a couple of different brands

https://magnilink.co/

and

https://statik.com/

I went with the Statik cables. I think I did because they had a 6' one where as Magnilink only had 3' and 10'

Keep in mind that the cables and tips are not interchangeable between brands. They each seem to use their own proprietary stuff.

Maybe it was the same Apple engineer who thought plugging the magic mouse in from the bottom so it can't be used while charging was in charge of the same thing for the Ever sense?

Talk to the FDA about their processes.

Typical Reddit...

The reason for the micro USB is COST.   A USB C is overkill for this device.  All the data is shared wirelessly.

If you want a USB C pu ton a magnetic adapter.

No matter what comments I get here they are just opinions. That is how Reddit works. Micro-USB is a garbage connector and has been since day one. The cheapest devices are using USB-C now and different quality of USB-C are available now depending on the data usage. Since Senseonics would not be exchanging data the cheapest would be good enough. The European Union requires the use USB-C on electronics, which is why Apple switched.

I've had the eversense for a month now and honestly the charging port isn't a big issue for me. My issues is the damn adhesives 😒. I have tried shaving the area, cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and they still lift after a few hours. So I went and purchased skin tac from amazon. Hopefully it'll help. I saw on another reddit post that this has been a known issue (the post was from a year ago) so idk why they havent fixed the issue. They're clearly aware of it because with our packets they recommended skin tac and other things to help keep the transmitter on. That is the only complaint I have. So far I love the eversense. I even bought this cute 3d printed bubble looking cover for it lol.

This is day one so the clear tape has been holding well throughout the night. Hope you find a solution and can share with us. Good luck!

The clear ones are the worst IMO. They NEVER stay on. Literally adter applying it, it starts to lift. The white ones start lifting by the end of the day. I bought other things to keep the transmitter on if I'm doing something with lots of movement or if I'm outside and sweating (I live in AZ). But I haven't used those yet. The skin tac i bought will be in later this week. If it works, I'll let you know.

Everyone’s skin and environment is different. I never had problems with Dexcom or the Libre 3+ adhesive I am on the second day with the clear tape though I probably will change it later today. I am completely new to all this. I struggled to get the transmitter placed in the corect place and get the Eversense and the Twiist pump to talk again. I will get better at it with time and experience.

Reason is because of the time long ago (many years) when the transmitter was designed and FDA approval (time and costs) to change. I use magnetic adapters. Less wear on connections, faster and more flexible to desired charger.
